FBLA Racks Up Region Awards

By: Madison Sisemore

Georgia FBLA Region winners were announced Monday, January 18, 2021. LaFayette High School FBLA produced five students advancing to state, three of them being champions! LaFayette High School is in Region 8 which contains all of the high schools in 14 different counties, big and small. Which makes this a huge win for our young and growing chapter. The following members placed in the top 10 at region:

Braden Queen- Computer Applications (Champion)

Marley Jean Pierre & Nick Radtke (team event)- Sports and Entertainment Marketing (Champions)

George Dong- Business Calculations (3rd place)

Jacey Baker- Business Communications (9th place)

When asked about his team's win, Marley Jean Pierre said, ”... overall the test was pretty easy and I'm proud of what Nick and I accomplished.” Advisor, Mrs. McWhorter says, “I am very proud of our members this year. It has been challenging to keep the chapter active during all the breaks in school attendance and virtual learning, but the students have pushed through and they really worked hard to represent our High School well in Region 8.”

These members as well as some students competing in “straight to state” events will be competing at the state level this year. We’re wishing our FBLA luck as they pave the way for future members!

They broke their personal chapter record and had 11 students advanced to the State Leadership Conference in March. The team of Riley Mitchell, Landon Mauk, and Danielle Gruber placed 8th in the region Biomedical Debate. This was a test on genetically modified babies. HOSA educates students on the current medical problems in today's world, and on the variety of careers in the healthcare field. The purpose of HOSA is to help students learn to solve problems and to produce fantastic leaders who have a passion for changing the future of Healthcare in our community and in the world. It has changed people into leaders that aspire to be better in the world around them. HOSA teaches students valuable life skills that they will use in their academic and professional lives.

We spoke with HOSA President, Riley Mitchell, and Danielle Gruber. Danielle says, “When I first joined HOSA I thought it was just a healthcare club, but it is actually so much more than that. It helps you learn leadership and technical skills to help prepare you for your future careers.” Riley Mitchell says, “As the President of HOSA for the past four years at LaFayette High School, I have learned so much about the future of healthcare and how to become a better leader through servant leadership, community service, and teamwork.” HOSA has even helped people decide what healthcare career they want to pursue.

CTAE Names New Jr. Advisory Board

By: Jacob Chandler

The new JR CTAE advisory board was established on January 15, 2021. This advisory board was constructed by Career, Technical and Agricultural teachers to give students a voice in the development and improvement of the pathway offerings at LHS. These students will give the CTAE teachers input about the pathways from the student perspective.

Just recently they filmed videos to send to the middle school about the Pathways. The board is made up of students in grades 10-12 who have taken at least 2 levels of a pathway. These students were chosen based on their responsibility, leadership, and dedication to their pathways. Board members will participate in projects and initiatives that will improve CTAE programs. This allows students to fortify connections within the community and provide enrichment opportunities for students who value career and technical education careers.

Students who were chosen for the JR CTAE advisory board are; Olivia White, Lydia Lorenz, Katie Chamlee, Danielle Gruber, Natalie Horn, Nick Radtke, Allison Peterson, Cherish Finley, Zach Ellis, Alexis Blaylock, Kaylie Guthrie, Blakely Perkins, Jonah Cowan, Hallie Alexander, and Parker Lively.
