There is so much to discover outside and we are prepared for all the adventures! We go to the forest for two hours every day and sometimes all day. If it rains children have special pants and jackets assigned to them that keeps them dry. And in the winter months we supply the gear that keeps them warm.
Throughout the year we expand the class boundaries in the forest as trust is built between students and teacher. We start out in a small boundary while we learn the rules of our forest.
We encourage children to expand their physical boundaries of what they think is out of their comfort zone. We allow them to understand what risk analysis means and how they can innately be confident in taking risks with climbing and taking falls while running. They can understand how to get back up after a tumble and know they are okay. This self regulation process is never forced but rather allowed to grow in their realm of comfortability.
The students have the freedom to have meaningful play where their imagination is stretched and expanded using any of the natural resources they want. When engaged in this type of deep play critical thinking skills sharpen, creativity grows, and internalized feelings often hard to express are cathartically released without inhibition.
During moments throughout the week students will often sit still and unmoving. They have a freedom to reflect in the stillness that the forest provides to internalize their encounters, adversities, triumphs and simply how they feel. Play and reflection is an integral part of their daily forest routines.
