While we don’t have a college counselor this year, Rachel Davis and Nathan Wilcox will still support the college process. Nathan will work with your students on essay writing and Rachel will assist them with the Common App, application process. We also have a dedicated page for various college counseling services. The SAT requests our students to understand concepts that we begin teaching in the 9th grade as part of our Waldorf Curriculum as we are a College Preparatory High School. In addition, our curriculum aligns with the Common Core Standards.
Humanities Curriculum:
9th Grade: Vocabulary, Grammar, Essay Structure, and Literary Analysis as well as work with Non-fiction texts.
10th Grade: builds on the skills introduced in 9th grade and asks the students to work in a deeper way with the texts.
11th Grade: MLA formatting is introduced and students begin to work directly with the analysis of other's written arguments. Grammar returns for a deeper look at sentence structure and complex punctuation. They are expected to become more independent in their reading and use resource materials as well as to discern when materials might hold bias. Students begin to develop their writer's voice by learning how to deepen their analysis in essays in understanding the way in which the parts of an essay are interconnected.
12th Grade: In September and October essay and application support is part of the curriculum.
Math Curriculum
9th Grade: solving equations in one variable, graphing and solving two-variable linear equations, graphing and solving inequalities, factoring quadratics, simplifying exponential and radical expressions, probability
10th Grade: angle theorems, proving similarity and congruence, mensuration, trigonometry, logarithms
11th Grade: types of functions (polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric), graphing functions, complex numbers, inverse functions, conic section curves
The SAT and ACT are designed so that most people taking them will get average scores. Most people who achieve high scores have spent many hours studying strategies for taking these types of tests.
Before devoting time and money into preparing for the SAT or ACT, we suggest that you talk as a family about the type of schools your student is wanting to apply to. If the list includes schools that place an emphasis on standardized test scores and your student is looking to achieve high scores, then you may likely want to invest in a private tutor. Both Michelle Boynton and Jeremiah Johnson offer private tutoring for these purposes.
Many colleges and universities are now going test-optional, meaning that they will accept applications from students who have not taken the SAT or ACT. These schools are more interested in the student's transcript, essays, recommendation letters, and interview. These are the types of schools that really understand the value of a Waldorf Education.
