A few College of Wooster updates to share below, including a snapshot of the Class of 2025, an open invitation to visit in person this fall, some virtual opportunities, and a glimpse of two of our Wooster seniors. We’re also excited to share a few national recognitions, including The Princeton Review, where Wooster shone in categories such as mentoring, race relations, and…where students study the most!
Snapshot of the Class of 2025…our largest class in over a decade
Wooster welcomed first-year students from 41 states and 43 countries, and 17% of this class identifies as first generation.
An Invitation to Visit
Wooster has several in-person small group visits planned for this fall and spring, but we’re eager to welcome counselors and IECs at any time of year. We can host you overnight and provide opportunities for you to connect to current students and staff during a personalized visit. Please use our counselor sign-up page or contact me directly to set up your visit to Wooster at 330-263-2201 or agamble@wooster.edu
Virtual Opportunities
In addition to our counselor-specific tours, we have a robust series of virtual events for prospective students that speak to all aspects of student life, including panels specific to diversity on campus, STEM majors, D3 athletics, and study abroad. We have virtual interviews for students, and we’re also ready to set up a one-on-one conversation for counselors with a current student. Merit Aid
We’re still celebrating the chapter dedicated to Wooster in Ron Lieber’s book, The Price You Pay for College, where Wooster is described as the college “that does it all”. Our Early Aid Estimator, available in mid-summer 2023 for high school students planning to attend college in Fall 2024. , is held up as an example of transparency in the aid process. Wooster is also committed to providing aid for international applicants. Please encourage students to apply for our competitive merit aid awards, and know that all students are considered for our Dean’s Award as applicants.
Testing
Wooster has been test optional for domestic applicants since 2019- and fifty percent of incoming students submitted tests scores in 2021. We do not use submitted scores when we consider students for merit aid.
Student Profiles
I was initially drawn to Wooster due to the resources and opportunities that all students had access to. Coming out of high school after working as an intern for my congresswoman, I knew that I needed a college to support and help me further my internship experience, which Wooster has. Accessing my professors and forming genuine relationships with them was also a massive plus for me. Though the College is academically rigorous and students strive to do well, students aim to help each other, whether studying together or helping each other with homework. I admire how everyone on campus wants each person to succeed and will actively ask and help see how they can achieve what they want. I don’t think there’s any other community like Wooster’s that uplifts and supports everyone. What surprised me about Wooster was how professors take time to help and get to know students. Most liberal arts colleges boast about small class sizes and being more than a number in the classroom. However, I did not expect to have hour-long conversations and coffees weekly with multiple faculty members - even those not in my department. The connections I’ve made with the Wooster faculty will stay with me long after I graduate, something I am very grateful for. My Senior Independent Study is regarding the contemporary rise and success of the far-right in Western Europe. Through my research, I observe how anti-immigrant rhetoric and ethnonationalism affect Western European politics and if they can be regarded as a direct factor to the far-right’s recent popularity in these states.
Wooster offered me a place where I would be able to succeed as both a student and an athlete while taking advantage of other great organizations and activities on campus. Wooster is a tight knit community with smaller class sizes where professors are very accessible and will work to help each student learn and succeed. I was surprised by the different student organizations and volunteer options for students on campus like the health coach program. My senior Independent Study looks into chemotherapeutic compounds and will run tests to determine if they contain antimicrobial activity.
