A gap year (a.k.a. a sabbatical year), is a year-long break before or after college, in which students travel, work or engage in educational and developmental activities. Many students who take a gap year grow in maturity, have more clarity about their education path and are better prepared to benefit from high education.
Typically, gap years occur between high school and college, or after graduating college and before beginning graduate school. Students taking a gap year may still continue their education by taking advanced courses in various subjects, learning a trade, volunteering, traveling, taking an internship, playing sports, participating in a cultural exchange, etc.
Many parents worry that their children will continue to defer their education if they take a gap year, however, studies indicate that students who take a gap year can preform better academically than those who do not.
