I want to continue to expand my program beyond my classroom to the goal of adding art to Victorville, CA. Whether it is with finding a space within our school campus to display my student's art or collaborating with the City of Victorville to create an Annual High Desert Art Festival. My students need a space to share their art with the community around them and be proud of what they have made! The wheels are already rolling but there are steps that need to be taken to achieve a community that loves art.
Make an art display case for my class.
Find a designated space to display student work at Silverado
Find a space to display student in the City of Victorville throughout the school year
Work with the City of Victorville and Victor Valley High School District to start a district wide art show and open it up to the public.
Turn the district art show into an art festival for all arts (music, dance and drama performances, displayed art, etc.)
Open up the art festival to all cities in the high desert or maybe even beyond.
Being a new teacher was intimidating. It is such a whirlwind that the best thing you can do is just hold on to your seat as you are flying through the year at 200 miles per hour. Some things to help you as you start your career is to:
Be bold and confident - Know that you are the teacher and they are the students. This is your class and just like any kid in any situation they will test you to see how you react. Stay calm but certain that you are doing the right thing.
Make relationships - Even though you shouldn't let the students walk all over you, you can still get to know them and build a relationship with them. They learn more about you and that you care about them. It helps to create a welcoming environment too.
Other teachers are your friends - In my department, we can really depend on one another. If you have questions or need help with a situation, the teachers around you are your best chance at success. Don't be a stranger to the ones that have your back.
