This course is a continuation of skills developed in French I. Emphasis is placed upon expanding and refining the working vocabulary and enabling students to communicate more efficiently in French. Students are encouraged to initiate and sustain conversation. Along with implementing Checkpoint B vocabulary, students will learn the past tense, object pronouns, and various irregular verbs. Students will also read and comprehend authentic materials; listen and comprehend short passages; and write lengthy summaries through the Effective Communicator process.
In this course students develop a repertoire of communicative skills, which again students will try to attain mastery skills through various implementations of the Effective Communicator process, thus having the students being able to be understood by native speakers. Students will be expressing these skills through extensive use of listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills by a strong grammatical foundation in and knowledge of present, past, future, conditional, and subjective tenses and Checkpoint B vocabulary. Students will be introduced to various cultures and traditions that help convey the essence and understanding of the French language and Franco-speaking countries.
The basic aim of this course is to develop fluency in each of the four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking through immersion. All instruction and discussions will be taught in the French language. Students will reach mastery levels through developmental skills from a college-based curriculum, while demonstrating advanced skills of the French language. This will prepare students for a deeper understanding of cross cultural differences. Students will be provided with the skills needed in order to communicate on a higher level with the confidence needed to compete in today’s career opportunities.
Spanish I introduces students to the Hispanic culture and countries while providing students with the appropriate skills needed to communicate in a language other than English. The key goal of the course is to build upon students’ working vocabulary and knowledge of grammar skills and structures. Students will be required to read short passages and demonstrate comprehension in a variety of ways. Speaking skills will be developed by asking and answering questions and through dialogue exchange. A strong emphasis will be placed on listening comprehension so that students will learn vocabulary and grammar in context but also proper pronunciation as well.
Students will develop knowledge and respect for other cultures by learning about aspects of family life, holidays, gestures, and traditions.
Spanish II reviews and refines basic grammar skills and structures. Vocabulary and grammar mentioned briefly in Spanish I are further developed and new structures such as past, simple future, and present progressive tenses are introduced. Vocabulary instruction is expanded and reinforced in accordance with the Checkpoint B topics. Reading skills are developed by requiring students to comprehend and discuss passages, short stories, and advertisements. Speaking and listening skills are reinforced through daily classroom exchange and speaking dialogues. In addition, students are required to improve written expression by composing pieces of increasing length.
Students continue to learn about the people, lifestyles, and countries of the Spanish-speaking world and develop cross cultural skills and awareness.

The course furthers the knowledge of students’ language skills through an extensive review of the fundamentals of Spanish structure and by emphasizing oral reading comprehension and self-expression through speaking and writing. Students will learn to express present, past, and future ideas accurately, comprehensibly and fluently. The course also expands students’ understanding of the civilization, culture, and customs of Spanish-speaking people.
