Which class should I take?  

Read the descriptions, watch the videos and use the attached document to make the best decision for you about which class to take. 

COLLEGE PREP READING 10-11

This course is specifically designed to enhance students’ reading skills for college and career readiness with emphasis on reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary. The course is based on empirical research and proven strategies to improve students’ reading abilities. Students will develop and apply a variety of reading comprehension strategies to enhance their understanding of texts across all subject areas in school. The in-depth reading support will prepare students for the rigor of college and/or career. Reading materials will include novels, nonfiction text, content area textbooks, newspapers, magazines, and electronic media.

NOTE: Students in College Prep Reading 10-11 will also be enrolled in English 10 or English 10 honors or English 11 or AP English 11. This course will fulfill an elective. It does not count as an English credit.

ENGLISH 10

English 10 engages and supports students in the development of skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening that are the foundation for any creative and purposeful expression in language. By the end of grade 10, students will be able to read and respond independently and proficiently to a variety of complex texts at the high end of the 9-10 complexity band. 

This writing intensive course aligns with the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards.


ENGLISH 10 HONORS

English 10 Honors provides students opportunities to acquire the knowledge, concepts, and skills needed for Advanced Placement English courses at the 11th and 12th grade levels. These opportunities enhance the development of skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening that are the foundation for any creative and purposeful expression in language. By the end of grade 10, students will be able to read and respond independently and proficiently to a variety of complex texts beyond the 9-10 complexity band. 

This writing intensive course aligns with the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards.

Each class is a semester class with the exception of Journalism.
