Frequently asked Questions from families
The school district revokes a students device after graduation. This could be graduating from high school or graduating from ATP (the adult transition program). However, there are options available to families to receive AAC devices outside of school. Please see the section 'Is insurance the only option to get my child an AAC outside of school?'
There are multiple reasons why an AAC user might tap buttons repeatedly. Please check out these articles:
According to California law, the device may remain with the family for 30 days after changing school districts. The new school district should be contacted the family and new the original school district about getting their child an in-district device. The old device should then be sent back to the district it originated from. Ask your new district if thet can send it back for your family.
Speak with your child’s SLP (Speech and Language Pathologist) or their case manager about a possible AAC assessment.
After staff has spoken to parents about an AAC assessment they will fill out a request for observation. An AT (Assistive Technology) personnel will then come out to screen the student and determine if it would be appropriate to move forward with the assessment. If the screening determines it appropriate, an assessment plan is signed. AT then has 60 days to complete the assessment and hold the meeting. Both staff and families will be interviewed about the student during this time, including a questionnaire. Once all data has been collected a meeting will be held with the family and staff to go over the results.
Devices will be provided as they become available. We apologize for any delays but thank you for your patience.

No, please only use this device for communication. It will reduce confusion and frustration for your child. All devices will be kept on guided access to ensure students can stay focused on their communication.
Please inform your child’s SPED (Special Education) team about his or her device. They will contact AT (Assistive Technology) about the device and set up an amendment add his or her IEP (Individual Education Program).
No, this is not the only option for AAC outside of school. A California state program called ‘voice options’ assists families to receive AAC devices either discounted or free of charge. Please speak with AT (Assistive Technology) if this is something you may be interested in.
