For the latest news on Kaltura, see
In Canvas it is possible to add videos to Kaltura, and publish them in your Canvas course.
To do so, you need the following items your in a Canvas course menu:
My Media
Media Gallery
My Media is personal. In My Media you can manage your own videos. Media Gallery is specific to a course: videos are added to a Media Gallery by teachers and/or students who have access to the relevant Canvas course.
Important: In order to use My Media and Media Gallery in a Canvas course, it is necessary to make these links visible in the Canvas course menu as follows:
1. In your Canvas course menu, click on Settings
2. Select the Navigation tab
3. Drag the items My Media and Media Gallery to the top to make them visible in the course menu.
4. Click Save
You can post videos to My Media first, or you can post videos directly to your course without posting them to My Media. It depends a bit on the workflow you use:
if you want to upload your videos first, you can do so by adding them to My Media;
if you are designing your course, it may be more convenient to add your videos directly to your course: to the Media Gallery or to another part of the Canvas course (eg Announcement, Assignment etc).
It is also possible to add videos to the Shared Repository, which is a university-wide gallery of video material only available to teachers and support staff.
My Media is a media library in which you can upload and manage your own video files. You can access My Media by clicking on the menu item that you made visible in your Canvas course (see instruction under section 1).
Media content in My Media can be published in the Media Gallery of the Canvas course, but can also be added to Canvas items such as Pages, Assignments, Discussions.
Go to My Media using the link in the Canvas course menu. You will see the Add New button, here you can create and / or add videos to your My Media.
When clicking on the Add New button, a drop down menu will appear, from which you can choose between Media Upload, YouTube, Kaltura Capture and Video Quiz.
When you choose Media Upload, you can either use +Choose a file to upload or use Drag & Drop to upload files from your own computer to My Media.
If you select YouTube in the Add New menu, you can add a YouTube video. The advantage of adding a YouTube video using Kaltura, is that you can use Analytics. For example, you can view how many times a YouTube video has been viewed in your Canvas Course.
If you choose Kaltura Capture, Kaltura Personal Capture will open. Kaltura Personal Capture is a userfriendly video recording tool which enables you to make webcam recordings, screen recordings (of Powerpoint slides), and audio recordings and to combine these, resulting in "multistream" videos. For more information, see Kaltura Personal Capture.
If you choose Video Quiz from the Add New menu, you can create a quiz by adding questions to a video, e.g. multiple-choice questions. For more information, see Kaltura Video Quiz.
In My Media, you can manage your videos. Click on one of your videos in My Media, and you will see your videos with the following options below:
1. Details will show you the meta tags you added to the video.
2. Share displays the html code that you can use to embed the video in an item of your Canvas course (e.g. Discussion, Page etc). An easier way to do this is by clicking on the Kaltura icon in the Rich Content Editor of a Canvas course item. See also, How do I add a video to my course?
3. Actions reveals drop-down menu options to, among other things, Edit, Delete, Publish the video.
Actions
You will find the Actions button in several places, e.g. at the top of the My Media overview page but also below a specific video. The different menu options are further explained below:
Edit
Here you will find a number of options for editing your videos, including:
Details: Add a description and / or meta tags to your video.
Options: adjust settings for Comments and Clipping.
Collaboration: transfer ownership of your video, or assign co-editors and co-publishers.
Thumbnails: upload a picture, or generate an automatic "thumbnail" for your video.
Downloads: Select the formats in which a video can be “downloaded” here. A separate Download button will appear below your video. Keep in mind that only videos that you own (or of which you are co-owner) can be downloaded.
Captions: advanced users can add Captions files, e.g. Dutch subtitles, here.
Attachments: you can attach a file to your video here.
Timeline: Add Chapters and / or Powerpoint Slides to specific moments in your video.
Launch Editor
You will also find a separate Launch Editor button here, you can edit the video using:
Trimming : for trimming the start and end of a video
Clipping: for creating video clips from existing videos,
Chopping & Splicing: for cutting out parts of a video or sticking parts together.
When editing a video this way, you create a new item from an existing one. Every video clip you create in Launch Editor is saved as a new video. Video clips can be made from your own videos in My Media, or from videos of others in a Media Gallery of a Canvas course, depending on the video settings (see Options below Edit). For example, you can turn a video into a new video clip to use it as an introduction, or you can cut up a video into a number of shorter video clips according to subject. For more information on what's possible with Launch Editor, watch the videos on the right, or see Kaltura Video Editing Tools

Videos must be "published" to a Media Gallery of a Canvas course to become visible to other students and teachers in the Canvas course.
In My Media:
Double click on your own video or

You can easily add videos to your Canvas course by using the 'Embed Kaltura Media' option available in the Rich Text Editor. In this way, you can add a video from My Media, your Canvas course Media Gallery, or the Shared Repository. You can also upload a video from your own PC by selecting Add New> Media Upload, or make a recording with Kaltura Personal Capture, by selecting Add New> Kaltura Capture.
If you are a teacher of a course in Canvas, you can use the Rich Text Editor to embed videos in Announcements, Assignments, Discussions, Pages in Modules, and other content items. In short, you can embed a video in Canvas wherever you can put text.
Students can make their videos available in some Canvas content items, such as Discussions, and when submitting an Assignment.
To embed videos in your Canvas course, follow these steps:
Select the Canvas content item of your choice (Pages, Discussions etc) and click Edit.
Select the Kaltura icon in the Rich Text Editor.
A page named Embed Kaltura Media will open in which you can search and select videos which you have already placed in My Media, Media Gallery and / or Shared Repository.
If you do not have any video material in these repositories, click the Add Media button in the top right corner of the screen. It allows you to upload a video from your PC (Media Upload) or directly record with Kaltura Personal Capture (Kaltura Capture) and upload it in Canvas. As a last option you can also create a Video Quiz here.
Assuming that you want to select a video in My Media, Media Gallery and or Shared Repository:
Click on the arrow next to Select,
Choose between the following 3 sizes: Large, Medium, Small.
Your video is now displayed in the Canvas content item of your Canvas course.
If you have created or uploaded a new video , it is now also added to My Media.
A Media Gallery is a repository of media content for a specific Canvas course. Videos are specifically assigned to the Media Gallery by teachers and / or students, and is visible to all teachers and students within the Canvas course. Please note, it is not a collection of "all" media found in the Canvas course.
The Media Gallery, just like My Media, must first be added by a teacher to the Canvas course as described in section 1.
Once added, click on the tab Media to add videos to the Media Gallery. Click Add Media, now you can add media from several sources:
My Media: publish videos to the Media Gallery that you have previously added to My Media, by checking them and clicking Publish;
Shared Repository: publish videos to the Media Gallery that you have previously added to the Shared repository;
Add New: upload a video directly by using Media Upload, or add a YouTube video or create and add a Video Quiz to your Media Gallery.
Once you choose, Publish, you are making your videos immediately visible to students and teachers in the course.
If you would like to approve media of your students before it is published in the Media Gallery, you can check the option Moderate content in the Edit mode of the Media Gallery.
If you use this option in the Media Gallery of your Canvas course, the media of your students will not be immediately visible. Videos will be pending approval. Approve a video for publication by clicking the Pending tab and clicking Approved, or click Reject if you do not want the video to be shown in the Media Gallery.
In the Media Gallery, each video has the following options :
Add to Playlist: quickly add the video to a previously created playlist.
Remove: remove videos from the Media Gallery, including those of students.
Edit: edit a video in the Media Gallery (you only edit videos you own).
Students can only edit or remove videos they own. Depending on the settings, it may also be possible to let others edit your video.
Playlists
You can display specific videos which have been added to the Media Gallery in a Playlist. A Playlist enables you to decide in which order students are presented with the videos in the Media Gallery.
Playlists appear on the first tab of the Media Gallery: Home. Playlists can also be published in Canvas content items (Pages, Discussions, Announcements etc) of your Canvas course . You can add a playlist by clicking Embed Kaltura Media in the Rich Text editor of each text box found when editing a Canvas content item.
Creating a Playlist:
Click on the gray button at the top right of the Media Gallery
Choose Create Channel Playlist
In the following screen, enter a name for your playlist
In the Edit Playlist screen, add videos (from the Media Gallery) in the order in which you want to present them.
Once you have saved your playlist, it will be presented on the Home tab, the first tab of the Media Gallery. If you have multiple playlists on the Home tab, you can order these in the Edit mode of the Media Gallery.
The Shared Repository is a gallery of video material which is accessible to all employees of the VU University. Teachers can make their videos accessible to their fellow teachers using this repository. The repository is only available to VU employees.
