Interactive Video is a new tool in Kaltura which enables you to create Interactive Video Paths using hotspots, i.e. clickable objects. Hotspots can be used to link to another moment in a video. For example, to repeat an earlier part of the video, or to skip a part of the video. It is also possible to link to completely different video. Or you may also want to link to a web page for additional information. By using multiple hotspots, it is possible to determine numerous video paths that a student can take and in which he or she can experience the content of the video(s).
Interactive Video Paths Walkthrough
Examples
At the start of a video, a student is presented with an options menu. On the basis of, an interest, skill or need for specific information, the student chooses which video he or she wants to view next.
After watching an intro, a student chooses what they want to watch based on the content of this intro by clicking on hotspots. Using Analytics you track which hotspot was most frequently clicked based on this intro.
While watching a video, a student is asked a question. Depending on the answer given, he or she will receive an explanation as to why the question was (partially) answered correctly or incorrectly.
Advantages
There are a number of advantages in having students choose their own video content:
Video content can be better tailored to personal needs.
Choice-based learning can help to prepare them for similar situations in practice.
Compared to a regular linear video, an interactive video is more likely to a hold a student's attention. The actions asked of the student promotes student engagement with the video content.
Interactive Video in combination with Analytics, helps to gain insight into student engagement and the student's learning process.
Storyboard
Creating a comprehensive Interactive Video generally requires careful planning and preparation. It is recommended to first create a storyboard to map out exactly what you want to do and to determine in advance which scenarios you want to present to your students. Using this storyboard, you can start to create, edit or prepare videos needed to build an Interactive Video.
Example interactive video with an option menu:
Example interactive video using a question:
1. Go to My Media in a Canvas course or go to video.vu.nl
2. Click Add New and select Interactive Video.
Complete the following in Create Interactive Video page:
Set Details: add a Name, Description, and Publishing Schedule if you want make the video only available for a given period of time.
Set Media: Add all the videos you need to build your Interactive Video
Click Create
In the Interactive Video Composer you can start to create video paths by adding multiple videos which you can connect by using nodes.
Click the top right button Show Media to view the previously added videos.
Drag and drop a video to the start node (3).
You can drag and drop the remaining videos to the node map as well. Once you add a videos to the composer, they are converted into nodes which you can use to create Interactive Video Paths.
Videos can be added multiple times as to create different types of video paths between videos or video cue-points/video fragments.
Double click on the node to give it a meaningful name. This will turn out to useful once you start making connection between nodes.
Drag and drop a to the start node:
Nodes & Path Connectors
The arrow found on the right of a node can be used to connect to another node.
These arrows are also called Path Connectors and can be used to make connections between videos and/or video fragments. You can make as many connections as you want.
In the example on the right connections have been made from the video in the start node:
to the start node itself, this creates a loop: the video can be repeated;
to the node with video Topic 1;
to the node with video Topic 2;
and to the node with video Topic 3. This is a Default Path and can be recognized by the dotted line. See below for more info on this setting.
Hotspots (clickable objects) are automatically created in the video from which the connection is made. These hotspots serve as an entry point to navigate to the next video or video fragment.
In the example above, for every connection made, a hotspot is automatically created in the video of the start node, as can be seen below (in blue).
Double-click on a node/video to enter its settings and to begin editing your hotspots. A new page opens in which you can play the video, view the timeline of the video, and configure a number of settings of this node.
Node Properties
Adjust the settings of a node in the right menu such Name and Description.
Behavior
You can set a Default path in the Behavior menu of the node. By setting a Default Path, you define which video will be played automatically after this video has been viewed.
At End Behavior, choose Default path
Select the target node/video.
In this page, you will also find the hotspots stacked in the upper left-hand corner which you created using the Path Connectors. See below for more info on how hotspots can be i.a. configured, edited and positioned.
The example above concerns the start node/video. Hotspots will be stacked in the upper left-hand corner. In this example (in blue): Start, Topic 1 and Topic 2
Hotspots
Click on a hotspot:
to edit the text and change its position;
to use the timeline to determine at which point a hotspot should appear;
to adjust the settings of the hotspot in the right-hand menu under Properties, Behavior and Styles.
Properties
Here you can edit the exact position and size of the hotspot .
Behavior
A hotspot is a clickable object. Set here at Action what happens when the hotspot is clicked. E.g:
Instant Jump: A follow-up video shown when clicking the hotspot can be defined in the Destination field. In the Time field you can set from which video fragment the follow-up video is shown.
URL: add a link to this field, if the hotspot should lead to a website. This will open in a new tab when clicking on the hotspot.
Styles
Here you can edit the text and background of the hotspot.
When you are editing or changing settings of hotspots, it is useful to use the click-through mode. By turning on this slider at the top right, you can preview the result.
Once you're done, click on the arrow at the top left:
Click on Save Project
To view the end result, click on Exit project.
Editing the Interactive Video
After you save your project, it can be reopened by double clicking on it in My Media:
Go to the Action menu
Click on Edit Interactive Video
