Photo Evidence, Sketches, Assessment and Explanation
In this photo, we can see lots of riffles from the bends and meanders in the river. It also showcases the minimal sedimentary deposition and highlights the variety of depth regimes present.
This photo shows us that this area has seen little to no human impact in terms of channeling the river. We also see the dense Riparian Zone that extends for 400 feet in either direction providing shade and bank protection
We can see given this particular embankment that the river does not fill its entire allotted area, leaving dry spots that are uncolonizable. We also see the epifaunal substrate available to the critters in the form of downed logs and chunky rock habitat.
I don't know how this guy got in there, but the imagery was too vivid not to sketch it as he wiggled around in my shoe. The crawfish seemed very lively (as he was clawing and pinching me), indicating a good healthy diet and overall health.
I did some early-morning exploration of my site and came upon a section where most of the brush had been beaten out by larger pines and other conifers, leading to a beautiful dappling effect on the water and my breakfast granola bar.

I think that I had never really realized how vital the abiotic factors affect the environment and the critters living in it, but doing this made me realize that habitats are carefully balanced and how differentiation, even in micro habitats like proximity to a mineral deposit can drastically change exoskeleton colors in crawfish (I saw a right red one the size of my hand near a big patch of different-colored sand.
