What are the benefits of being a part of the Peer-to-Peer Onboarding Program?
The Peer-to-Peer onboarding program provides newcomers with a support system and connects them with resources on and off campus. Additionally, it is an excellent professional development experience.
Who can be a Culture Champion?
Culture champions are:
employed at Virginia Tech for more than three years with an excellent performance history;
have time to be accessible to the newcomer;
very proud to be a Virginia Tech Hokie;
patient with good communication/interpersonal skills.
What is the difference between a Culture Champion and a buddy?
A culture champion provides guidance and support to a newcomer during their first months on the job, helping them adjust to campus life and the institutional culture. An onboarding buddy is a peer-level colleague who can help them settle into their new role, answer departmental questions, provide support, and act as a resource. Both roles are essential for a successful onboarding experience, but the culture champion ensures that the newcomer understands the benefits of being a Hokie.
Do I need to have experience with mentoring?
No experience is required! Culture champions and newcomers will receive guidance and support along the way. Hint: The secret sauce is in the quality of the peer-to-peer.
What is a Peer-to-Peer meeting?
It’s a time to meet one-on-one, get to know one another, chat about the campus culture and customs, and share advice or knowledge. Peer to Peer meetings may occur on any schedule, but they’re most effective when they happen consistently.
