Environmental Analysis

Initial Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Winery

Fig. 1: Base Simapro LCA, without Solutions, 0% cutoff

LCA Modeling using Simapro

  • GHG emissions measured in CO2e for one bottle of wine
  • Data taken from Simapro database or published literature
  • Analyzed with TRACI 2.1 v1.03 Environmental method

Environmental Breakdown of Winery - without solutions

Total: 6180g CO2e

Fig. 2: Base LCA Environmental Breakdown for single wine bottle, without solutions, 2.5% cutoff

GHG Drivers

  • Land clearing, specifically burning chopped lumber (74%)
  • Glass in bottles (3% from glass, 1% from transportation)
  • Electricity used in wine production (3%)
  • Using grass as a cover crop helped reduce emissions from Land Use Change (11%)

Life Cycle Assessment of Winery - with Solutions

This Life Cycle Assesment modeled in Simapro is one of our final deliverables in the project, and can be used to do much more than make flow and pie charts, although its usefulness in calculating where GHG emissions are coming from is easily apparent from them. The model can be updated over the course of implementation, as some of the assumptions become hard numbers (i.e. approximate number of miles glass bottle is transported to get to/from the winery). All of the processes in the model have been backed up by literature that is sourced in the program as well, so anyone who works on it can confirm/update the numbers behind each process (i.e. how much CO2e emissions are released producing each glass bottle).
