VHCC Upward Bound summer Academy

About the Event

The Department of Geosciences is worked together with the Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) Upward Bound summer program to provide science outreach activities to high school students (9th, 10th, and 11th grades) visiting Virginia Tech for the VHCC Upward Bound Summer Academy.

"Upward Bound programs are sponsored by institutions of higher education across the country with a target area to serve. There are many Upward Bound programs in operation around the country. The Upward Bound program of Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC), located in Abingdon, Virginia, serves students in Smyth County, Washington County, and the City of Bristol. The five high schools served are: Chilhowie, Holston, Northwood, Patrick Henry, and Virginia High."

  • When: July 29th; 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

  • Where: Derring Hall rooms 2060 and the Museum of Geosciences (room 2062)

  • Number of Students: approximately 12 students

Visiting students (~12) and chaperones (~5) arrived at 10:00 AM. Students were greeted, given an overview of hands-on demonstrations used in the geoscience classes, and provided information about geoscience careers and information about the Virginia Tech Department of Geosciences. The group had a short lunch break at 12:00 PM. The students were then given exclusive access to the exhibits in the Museum of Geosciences from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
