Dinwiddie 4-H is a part of a larger organization within Virginia Tech called Virginia Cooperative Extension. Within this organization, there are six 4-H Centers across the state that are assigned to localities based on geographic area. We are lucky to camp at the beautiful Airfield 4-H Conference Center in Wakefield (Sussex County), VA.
Campers are assigned to lodges that house 6-8 rooms. Rooms are airconditioned and heated and each individual room holds 4 bunk beds and a private bathroom with showers. Rooms accommodate up to 8 individuals including at least 1 teen counselor. Each lodge also has at least 1 adult in a private room for emergencies and supervision purposes.
The center provides trained staff who remain on site for 10 weeks of the summer and lead the educational programming from week to week. These staff are generally college age young adults who undergo a series of trainings in supervision, youth development, and emergency preparedness. They are AMAZING at what they do and work under the Center's Program Director. Program Directors are full-time, Virginia Tech employees who oversee the camping programs, education material, and training of staff. An EMT and/or nurse as well as MAT certified staff are on site day and night during the summer weeks.
Bunk beds are twin XL. Campers bring their own sheets OR sleeping bag in addition to their pillow. Cabins have heat/AC controlled in each room.
Each room has two sinks located outside the bathroom so that they may be used while others may be showering.
There is a door here that can close off the entire bathroom for full privacy for changing or showing. Two toilet stalls are in almost every room. There are some rooms with special ADA accomodating bathrooms so be sure to let us know if you have a need for one.
