Hero's Day is Friday, November 10th - Students in 3rd and 4th hour band will perform for veterans and first responders on campus in the morning. They have been asked to wear nice clothes in Americana colors, such as red, white, or blue. If they do not have something that works in those colors, they have been asked to wear black. We look forward to honoring these amazing community members!
Hero's day is an event put on by the Valley Park School District. Students from all buildings participate by welcoming veterans, active military and first responders to the school for a breakfast. After the breakfast, students recite various readings to the audience members, the elementary choir performs, the secondary choir performs and the 8-12th grade band performs. It is really a special day for all in attendance. The communication director sends out invitations to those in the community to invite them to join us.

All students have playing assignments throughout the school year. Now that we are deep in 1st semester, I have a handful of students who have still not turned in their playing assignments. All assignments are to be completed outside of class time. Students in 6-8th grade can use their academic hawk time during the school day to practice and record assignments. Students in 9-12th grade can use their WIN time to complete assignments. I offer at least one day after school every week that students can stay to use the space and get extra help from me. Students are told what day(s) they can stay after at the beginning of each week and sometimes they are aware with over a weeks notice so they can plan accordingly. That day does change every week, depending on staff meetings and doctor appointments I now have. Ideally, students are taking their instrument home to practice and work on things outside of class time.
I do take late work from students, within reason. If a student has not turned in a single assignment all semester and sends everything in right before grades are due in the gradebook/Infinite Campus, I can not guarantee I will be able to grade the playing assignment.
The band room has a student teacher this semester! Nick Neuendorf is a senior at Webster University and is working towards his degree of Music Education. He will be working with all grade levels of band students throughout the 1st semester. This week he has worked in small groups with students from the classes.
