The research investigates how people experience generative AI—technologies like ChatGPT, Midjourney, or synthetic voices—in their everyday lives. As these tools become more common, they raise important questions about trust, creativity, control, and fairness. Through the use of SenseMaker  the study collects personal stories and allows participants to interpret their own experiences. This approach captures not just what people encounter, but how they feel about it and what values are at stake.

The central research question is: How do citizens experience generative AI in their daily lives, and how can gathering these stories help shape fair and inclusive frameworks for AI development and governance?

Unlike many AI studies focused on risks or technical innovation, this one centers everyday life. It aims to uncover patterns in how people perceive and interact with AI, including what works, what doesn’t, and why. These insights can reveal blind spots, tensions, or unmet needs in current AI policies. 

Ultimately, the project contributes to a broader ambition: making the development and regulation of AI more democratic. By amplifying the voices of citizens and recognizing them as co-shapers of the digital future, the research supports new forms of participatory governance. It also connects to EuroSense’s mission of empowering the public and advancing democratic innovation in an increasingly digital society.
