In this activity, we made a timeline about the Civil Rights Movement. We did this because we want to learn more about the history. It is also helpful for the book we are reading in class. This activity help me to gain my researching skills like finding resources or making sure the resource is reliable.
Reflection: This activity was really interesting for me to learn about the Civil Rights history so I could better understand what happen in the past and also it's a really good time to practice my researching skills.
In this activity, we practiced research skills. We learned how to find the most important information and put it in order. We also used the CARS Test to check if our sources are good and true. These skills help us with our writing for school, especially for our big midterm report.
Reflection: In this activity
The Free Food Program by The Black Panther Party
Process: To complete this task, I first read the research paper to understand how the Black Panther Party started the Free Breakfast for School Children program in 1969. I used research skills like skimming to find the main idea and scanning the reference list to find specific details from sources like History.com and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. For planning, I organized the information to show how the Panthers' "Survival Programs" proved that Black communities could take care of each other. I also used your feedback about searching online and getting peer reviews to ensure the writing addressed how the government expanded its own programs due to the Panthers' success. During the writing and editing process, I focused on using clear language to explain that the Panthers believed food is a basic right. Finally, I checked the facts to make sure I correctly described how the National School Breakfast Program became a permanent law in 1975.
Reflection: This activity taught me that the Black Panther Party’s Free Breakfast program was a powerful example of "community power" that forced the government to change. I learned that many Black children in the 1960 were too hungry to study well, which is why the Panthers started feeding thousands of kids in 1969. It was interesting to find out that the government expanded its own school meals program because of the pressure from the Panthers. Regarding my research skills, I learned how to search for information online and how to use a reference list to find specific sources like History.com and Howard University. What went well was getting peer feedback, which helped me find problems in my first draft and make my writing clearer. I can improve by looking for even more details about the "Survival Programs" and making sure I organize my notes better before I start writing. This project showed me that food is a basic right for every student, and that history still affects how we get school lunch today.
In this poster, I want to share about global warming . I think my poster is great, but I can make some more improvements next time. First, I need to choose better words because "Energy Consumption" sounds like a bad thing, but I want people to save energy. Second, I should use more bright colors for the text so people can read it easily. Third, I want to fix the layout to make the space look more balanced. My classmate gave me feedback that the "How to Prevent" and "Effective Action" lists are almost the same. Because of this feedback, I want to changed my poster to combine them into one strong section. This year, my biggest area of growth is researching information by myself. To keep getting better, my actionable plan is to practice making small sketches before I start designing on the computer so my ideas are clearer and less confusing.
