Project Description

This project was sponsored by the Global South Lab at the Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures (IHGC), as part of a curriculum development initiative that awarded faculty members working on projects related to the research of the Global South Lab.

As part of this initiative, I was awarded a Curriculum Development Award for the project “Immigrants, Asylum Seekers, and Refugees in the Global South”.

Thanks to this IHGC grant, I was able to invite professors and researchers from Belgic, English, and American institutions. In addition to inviting guest speakers specialized in Latin American migratory issues, I had the opportunity of reviewing the syllabus of my SPAN 3300 course by selecting samples of narrative, theater, poetry, and experimental literature specifically dealing with regional, South-South, and South-North migration within and from Latin American countries.

Throughout the semester, students were exposed to different kinds of migrations. They investigated the experience of political and climate refugees, urban and border migrants, second-generation immigrants, and they studied narratives of internal displacement

The outcomes of this projects were: a final essay on a migratory issue chosen and analyzed by a student under the guidance of the professor, and a presentation created by students through VoiceThread. Each migratory topic was paired with an artistic project or texts dealing with the issue analyzed by the students.
