Grace Grossman
Grace Grossmann is a second year pre-med student double majoring in biology and Spanish. For her final project, she is investigating the juxtaposition between modern and traditional medicine in Mexico as depicted in various art forms such as poems and Diego Rivera’s murals. The contrast between these two sects of medicine is rooted in the conflict between indigenous Mexican cultures and colonizers. Therefore, this topic is important to Grace because she is studying to become a doctor and she strongly believes in the importance of respecting medicines from different cultures.
Grace Grossmann es una estudiante de medicina del segundo año, especializada en español y biología. Para su proyecto final, Grace investiga la yuxtaposición entre la medicina moderna y tradicional en México, y sus representaciones en varias formas de arte como poemas y los murales de Diego Rivera. El contraste entre esos dos métodos de medicina arraiga en el conflicto entre las culturas indígenas mexicanas y los colonizadores. Por lo tanto, este tema le importa a Grace porque está estudiando para ser doctora y cree firmemente en la importancia de respetar las medicinas de culturas diferentes.
Cole Snodgrass
Cole Snodgrass is a second year student from Alexandria, VA, majoring in Foreign Affairs. For this project, she is studying the experience of individuals traveling through Mexico to the US border, specifically on the cargo train known as “La Bestia”. As part of her project, Cole is also analyzing the poem “El tren de la muerte” from Consuelo Hernandez 's collection Poemas Migrantes. Her interest in this topic stems from her experience volunteering at the Progresso Literacy and Citizenship Center and working with immigrants from Latin America and the Middle East.
Cole Snodgrass está en su segundo año y es de Alexandria, Virginia, donde está especializándose en Asuntos Extranjeros. Para este proyecto, Cole está estudiando la experiencia de los migrantes fronterizos que cruzan el borde entre México y EE. UU. a bordo del tren de cargo conocido como “La Bestia”. Como parte de su proyecto de investigación, Cole está trabajando en el poema “El tren de la muerte”, parte de la colección Poemas Migrantes de Consuelo Hernández. Su interés en este tema procede de su trabajo voluntario con el Centro Progreso de Alfabetización y Ciudadanía en Alexandria, VA, una organización local que colabora con inmigrantes de Latinoamérica y Medio Oriente.
Ishrya Sharma
Hi everyone! My name is Ishrya Sharma, and I am a second-year at the University of Virginia. My major is Kinesiology with a minor in Spanish, on a pre-medical track. I have interests in medicine, nutrition, immigration, mental and physicial wellbeing, public health, advocacy, and activism. In my free time, I enjoy swimming, lifting weights, and visiting new places and restaurants. For this project, I am focusing on the mental health of immigrants. I believe this to be a multifaceted topic, due to the nature of immigration itself. Overall, I’m very excited for this project.
Hola a todos! Me llamo Ishrya Sharma y soy una estudiante del segundo año en la Universidad de Virginia. Mi especialidad es kinesiología y tengo una segunda especialización en español y medicina. Tengo intereses en medicina, nutrición, inmigración, salud física y mental, salud pública, defensa y activismo. En mi tiempo libre, disfruto nadar, levantar pesas y visitar nuevos lugares y restaurantes. Para este proyecto, estoy enfocándome en la salud mental de los inmigrantes. Hi! My name is Morgan and I am a student at the University of Virginia. I study Biology, Religious Studies, and I am getting a minor in Spanish. For my project, I am investigating immigration between the United States and Mexico. Specifically, I am exploring many forms of art created by immigrants about their trips. I think that this topic is crucial in the field of Politics and it is something that impacts many people in the United States. Immigration dynamics are, sometimes, not very well-known, and I think that analyzing migration art is a great way to learn about the struggle of border migration.
¡Hola! Me llamo Morgan y soy un estudiante en la Universidad de Virginia. Estudio Biología, Estudios Religiosos y estoy consiguiendo una asignatura secundaria en Español. Para mi proyecto, estoy investigando la inmigración entre los EE. UU. y México. Específicamente, estoy explorando muchas formas de arte creadas por los inmigrantes sobre sus viajes. Pienso que el tema es fundamental en el campo de la política ya que es un asunto que impacta a muchas personas en los EE. UU. A veces, no se conocen muy bien las dinámicas migratorias y pienso que analizar el arte de los inmigrantes es una manera eficaz para aprender sobre la lucha de los inmigrantes fronterizos.

I am a first year student hoping to pursue a double major in Art History and Spanish. For my project, I am exploring the experiences of women living in the towns close to the border between the United States and Mexico. I will use my investigations into this topic to examine Tanya Aguiñiga’s performance art piece Metabolizing the Border. I chose this theme and this artwork because I am interested in the intersection between gender and migration in Latin America, especially in the work of artists who belong to historically underrepresented groups within the narratives of art history.
Soy una estudiante de primer año y estoy especializándome en historia del arte y español. Para mi proyecto, estoy explorando las experiencias de las mujeres y las mujeres migrantes en los pueblos cerca de la frontera entre los Estados Unidos y México. Como parte de mi investigación, voy a examinar la obra performativa Metabolizando la frontera de Tanya Aguiñiga. Elegí este tema y esta obra porque me interesa la intersección entre los discursos de género y la migración en latinoamérica, específicamente me llama la atención el trabajo de las artistas que pertenecen a grupos históricamente subrepresentados y sus narrativas artísticas.
Devasish Pant
My name is Devasish. I am in my first year at the University of Virginia with a major in computer science and a minor in Spanish. My project will focus on Haitian immigration to the Dominican Republic. Specifically, I will speak about cultural differences between these two countries and why there is an incentive to migrate. This topic is of interest because, besides economic reasons for immigration, there are also racial and linguistic divides between these two countries.
Mi nombre es Devasish. Estoy en mi primer año en la Universidad de Virginia con una especialidad en informática y una segunda especialización en español. Mi proyecto se centrará en la emigración haitiana a la República Dominicana. Específicamente, hablaré de las diferencias culturales entre los países y de cuáles son las causas de los movimientos migratorios entre estas regiones. Este tema es de interés porque además de las razones económicas de la inmigración, también hay divisiones raciales y lingüísticas entre los dos países.
