BACKGROUND ON CANADA'S S TEAM: At the 2021 Olympics, the Canadian Women's National Team won the gold medal after beating Sweden in a penalty shootout. Canada beat Chile in their second game, but this victory was sandwiched by two 1-1 draws against Japan and Great Britain. They beat Brazil in penalty kicks in the quarterfinals which progressed them to a critical 1-0 win against their long-time rivals, the U.S. Though their path in the Olympics did not consist of many dominant wins, the Canadians remained consistent and level-headed in high-pressure situations. Canada is currently the #9 women's team ranked internationally.

Why we picked her:

Kadeisha Buchanan is the pick for our second center back in our Olympic Dream Squad for her dependability and strong force she offers on the Canadian backline. She has been a staple for the Canadian team since 2013 when she was called up at 17 years old. Since then, she has amassed 147 caps with 142 starts. After high school, she played soccer at West Virginia University and entered the NWSL draft in 2017. Beginning in January of that same year, she made the move to Europe where she played for Olympique Lyonnais until 2022. She is now a fixture on her club team, Chelsea Women, which has been known for their dynasty of dominance in the WSL with continuous flashy signings.

Despite being hugely accomplished during her run with the Canadian team, she is not a household name internationally or in Canada potentially due to the overshadowing of Canadian legend Christine Sinclair. However, as a youngest child, Buchanan is used to flying under the radar and carrying a quiet dignity.  She has expressed that moving to France in 2017 challenged her strong, fast playing style. She has adjusted into a player that is now more technical, precise, and possession-based. Her depth of skill has provided Canada a center back who is fearless in 1-on-1s or big tackles, but possesses the technical prowess to maintain composure. There is almost no doubt that Buchanan will come up huge for Canada during this summer's tournament.

"Just to have her experience is something that is really valued on the team and her leadership, the way she plays every game is very consistent and she makes sure she leaves her mark on the field every time we play." - Jayde Riviere on Kadeisha Buchanan (CBC)
