Girls Excelling in Math (GEM) Tournament

Area schools are invited to register teams of four girls to compete in either the lower division (Grade 6 and under) or upper division (Grade 8 and under) tournament. Participants will complete a team and an individual paper-pencil math event and a team hands-on challenge. Each participant will receive a Solve Like a Girl T-shirt and will have the opportunity to complete additional fun math problems to be entered to win raffle prizes.

Registration will open early February.  Click here to register your school. Register early by November 15 to gain access to coaching materials for your teams. If you are a teacher of 5th-8th grade students in a Charlottesville-Albemarle school, public or private, and you would like to be added to our distribution list, please email gem@villageschool.us.

This is a free event open to teams of girls in grades 5-6 or 6-8 from schools in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area. NOTE: For the 2027 GEM Tournament, 4th grade participants will be accepted only in cases where schools are unable to field at least one full team of 5th and/or 6th graders. Beginning in 2028, the GEM Tournament will be open to 5th through 8th grade students only.
