🌅 Beginning of the Year:  Level T Books

• What it looks like:   These levels include full-length novels and sophisticated non-fiction.   and young adult classics that contain mature themes, abstract symbols, and diverse perspectives.  Books may use non-linear timelines, such as extensive flashbacks or shifting narrative perspectives.   The content is mature and has emotionally challenging themes (e.g., injustice, moral gray areas, identity). Historical fiction requires a solid understanding of past global events.  These texts have sophisticated satire, irony, and advanced symbolism and sentences can be very long and contain multiple embedded clauses.

• Key Skills:  Readers make predictions, infer character motivations, and analyze how themes develop over time.  Students compare viewpoints, evaluate character growth, and distinguish fact from opinion in non-fiction.  Readers process long stretches of complex language silently and smoothly without needing picture clues or repetitive patterns.

• Vocabulary expansion: Students use context clues and root words independently to define unfamiliar terms on the page. [1, 2]

• Evaluating how a narrator’s bias, background, or limited point of view shapes how the story is told.  Recognizing how physical objects, settings, or recurring motifs represent abstract ideas.  Combining information across multiple complex chapters or separate texts to form a new conclusion.  Identifying how an author uses specific literary devices, word choices, or structures to evoke mood, tension, or tone.  These texts demand critical analysis, synthesis of multiple ideas, and deep comprehension of advanced prose.

🍁 Middle of Year:  Level U Books

• What it looks like:  Complex chapter books, series with sequels, biographies, historical fiction, and complex informational texts.  Stories tackle complex human experiences, societal problems (like war or poverty), and ethical dilemmas.  Pages feature dense blocks of text with fewer illustrations, relying instead on maps, charts, and specialized glossaries.

• Key Skills:  Understanding deep themes, symbolism, and subplots.  Tracking how characters change over time and dealing with moral or ethical dilemmas. Comparing different viewpoints, identifying underlying messages in historical or realistic fiction, and reading to learn information across school subjects.  Breaking multi-syllable words apart effortlessly using roots, bases, and affixes. Making deep inferences, recognizing symbolism, and analyzing how an author builds a plot or character.  Automatically solving tricky vocabulary words using context clues without losing the flow of the story.  Using reading as a tool to research and learn new facts across different school subjects.

🎓 End of Year:   Level V Books

• What it looks like:  Long, dense chapter books with small font sizes and virtually no supportive illustrations.Plotlines heavily focus on real-world preadolescent challenges, cultural diversity, and heavy societal issues like war, economic hardship, loss, or racism.  Texts rely heavily on sophisticated literary devices, including non-linear timelines, heavy use of flashbacks, stories-within-stories, complex symbolism, and extended metaphors.  Characters are completely multidimensional, flawed, and change drastically over time, requiring readers to infer their unstated motivations. 

• Key Skills:  Inferring Theme Through Character by connecting a character's growth and internal shifts directly to the overarching moral or theme of the book.  Recognizing when an author's literal words mean the exact opposite of their intended meaning.
