ZOOLOGY DEPARTMENT BWC

I. Dolphin Awarness program:

As a Part of “Project Dolphin”, announced by Prime Minister of India and Initiated by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change ,National Museum of Natural History, Government of India, various awareness activities were organised by staff members of Department of Zoology, under the guidance of Dr.D.Gladis, Principal, Bharathi Women’s College. In this regard , about 300 Students of various departments were assembled in Virtual Hall, Bharathi Women’s College on 21/07/25 at 10:30 am and a screening Dolphin awareness video was done followed by a Pledge to save dolphins. Students actively engaged in preparing placards containing slogans to save dolphins.This is followed by an Awareness Rally where students marched outside the campus carrying placards about dolphin conservation. They emphasised the need to protect dolphins to the common public. There was an enthusiastic response among the public and it provided an impactful awareness event to the people for Dolphin conservation.

II. National Seminar on Microbial Biotechnology:

A National Seminar on Microbial Biotechnology was organized by the Department of Zoology on 16.10.2025 at Velunachiyar Hall. Dr. M. Madhavi, Assistant Professor, PG & Research Department of Zoology, Ethiraj College for Women (Autonomous), delivered a lecture on “Microorganisms in Action: New Frontiers in Live Feed for Aquaculture Larvae,” highlighting the role of microbes in sustainable aquaculture practices.Dr. Siddhardha Busi, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, School of Life Sciences, Pondicherry University, presented a talk on “Bacterial Pathogenesis and Its Inhibition by Anti-Quorum Sensing Molecules and Photodynamic Therapy,” emphasizing innovative approaches to control bacterial infections.The seminar enriched students’ knowledge of recent advances in microbial biotechnology, promoted interdisciplinary learning, and inspired interest in research and career opportunities in life sciences.

III. Zoology Association:

The Zoology Department Association Programme was held on 16.10.2025 at Velunachiyar Hall. Dr. R. Kunguma Priya, Assistant Professor, Pachaiyappa’s College, delivered an engaging lecture on “Happy Hormones.” The lecture focused on the role of hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin in regulating mood, mental well-being, and overall health.

III. Workshop:

A workshop on “Entrepreneurship in Aquafeed Systems: Bridging Biology and Business” was conducted on 16.10.2025 by Dr. B. Uma, Bioentrepreneurial Club Coordinator and Head of the Department of Zoology. Dr. M. Madhavi from Ethiraj College for Women delivered an interactive hands-on training session that demonstrated how biological concepts can be transformed into viable business ventures. The workshop enriched and empowered over 77 students with practical skills and entrepreneurial awareness .

IV. Stray dog Awarness Program:

An awareness program on "Stray Dog Management" was organized by the Department of Zoology, Bharathi Women’s College, Chennai-108, as instructed by the Tamil Nadu Higher Education and Animal Welfare Departments (Ref. No. TNDCE/8510/2025-M2). Students from various departments participated in the event held at Velunachiar Hall on 12.12.2025 at 12:30 p.m. Dr. P. Amudha, Associate Professor of Zoology, delivered a talk on stray dog management, safe behaviour around animals, first aid for dog bites, and the importance of timely reporting. Students created and displayed placards and also recited poems to spread awareness.A permanent stray dog awareness board has been placed near the college entrance to educate students on emergency protocols and responsible behaviour.
