Un bouleversement musical se produit à la fin des années 70.

Dès 1976, le punk rock des Sex Pistols laisse une place au post-punk de Blondie, The Clash, The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Stranglers,  groupes qui jouent un rôle important dans la scène musicale indépendante des années 1980, et contribuent à la gestation d'autres courants tels qu la coldwave, le rock gothique, le rock industriel et le rock alternatif.

Le rock progressif et le disco / funk font une place à une musique pop plus inventive et festive, aidée par l'ajout de synthétiseurs (Yamaha, Roland, Korg), de boîtes à rythmes et de séquenceurs, marqueurs du  son electro synth-pop / new wave initié par des groupes tels Devo, Gary Numan ou Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
