This project is on causing shear thickening fluid jamming. Controllable fluid jamming could be used to replace valves in miniature systems. Though I had a foundation in fluid dynamics, non-Newtonian fluid was a new thing for me. The mechanisms of shear thinning and shear thickening evoked my great interest. I tested several commercial silica dispersions on the rheometer, but they didn’t shear thickening at all. Based on my advisor’s suggestions and thorough literature review, I understood that using rod silica and higher concentration can contribute to shear thickening. I started synthesizing silica colloid from silica and polyethylene glycol. After testing different concentrations of several kinds of silica in different molecular weights of polyethylene glycol, I found combinations with an obvious shear thickening phenomenon. I chose the best of them moved to the next step. Working with a colleague, I used various piezos and surface transducers to apply acoustic agitation to cause shear thickening fluid jamming. I also became interested in methods to actuate soft robots because they were totally different from mechanical actuators.
