Grow Up is a edutainment project consisting of platforming and educational content, where the player has to grow plants by manipulating the environmental conditions in order to progress through the levels.
Grow Up was an Industry Project for Australian Urban Growers, as part of the Work Integrated Learning unit IGB200. The game is supposed to teach the player about how elements of ecosystems are interconnected and how the environment affects a plants growth.
The player has to utilise three key plants, the Beanstalk, the Flower, and the Mushroom, in order to traverse the levels and overcome obstacles such as tall walls, swarms of bees, and large gaps. At the end of each level, a quiz bug blocks the exit until the player can correctly answer a question about ecosystems or vertical farming.
My role for this project was programmer. I entered the group partway through production, so had limited input on the design or initial implementation of the gameplay systems. Primarily, I was responsible for the implementation of the flower and beanstalk plants, as well as the behaviour of the bee swarms. Finally, I also implemented the level change systems and improved the movement system to add coyote time & one way platform support.
