The Zamora Memorial College is a private non-sectarian educational institution in Bacacay, Albay. It’s campus is located at the heart of poblacion of the town of Bacacay.
It was founded as the Zamora Memorial Institute in 1948 by Mr. Crispin B. Vergara Sr. (Oct. 24, 1892 – April 5, 1976). It was named after Fr. Juan of Atimonana, Quezon who put up the first collegiate course in the Province of Albay. It started with (two) classrooms in the old residence of the Torre Family, which is located at the corner of Torre St., and Marbella St. having 80 students from first year to fourth year. There were four dedicated and able mentors including the founder himself and the late Mr. Vicente Marco as Principal. Later, when the number of students increased the Zamora Memorial Institute was relocated to the Matias building at the corner of Bes Street and Barrameda Street. Unfortunately, that building was destroyed by the super Typhoon Trix in 1952.
The humble beginning of Zamora Memorial College, started in a rented old Spanish house located at Bes and Barrameda Streets. In search for a bigger venue Mr. Crispin Vergara decided to purchase a 1.5 hectare lot at Sto. Niño Street, Poblacion, Bacacay, Albay. The row of classrooms that were first constructed were made of wood and nipa which were easily destroyed by the typhoons. To provide a stronger building structure for the school, the founder, with the help of his son, Mr. Arsenio B. Vergara constructed a semi-concrete building which was located in front of the school lot.
Unfortunately, the building was put on fire by the unidentified men, but was immediately put off by concerned neighbors. To withstand the strong typhoons that regularly plagued Albay province, the founder conducted a bank loan amidst low tuition fees remittance from parents due to inadequate income from agriculture and fishing as caused by typhoon disaster. The older parents and more senior alumni would recall the access to secondary education which the school provided; otherwise, they have to travel to Tabaco City, which is three (3) towns away from Bacacay.
The second generation composed of the children of Crispin B. Vergara Sr.: Regina V. Lawenko, Josefa V. Clarino, Cecilia V. Moyano, Corazon B. Vergara, Crispin B. Vergara, Jr. and Arsenio B. Vergara saw fit that the school continue the commitment of their father to uplift the literacy level of youths of Bacacay. In 1994, Arsencio B. Vergaradecided to offertertiary education which offers Bachelor in Secondary Education, Bachelor in Elementary Education and Bachelor of Arts. Thus, the name Zamora Memorial College was conceived. The high school Department, was then ably managed by Mrs. Aida B. Vergara which paved way for the dynamic supervision and leadership of the school for almost 35 years.
At present the third generation Board of Trustees manage the school: Mr. Emmanuel V. Clarino, Chairman and its members: Mr. Bob V. Lawenko, Mrs. Fe Aglipay, Mrs. Venecia M. Bellen and Dr. Hazel B. Vergara. The development of the school as it journeyed from 1948 to the present is an exemplar of what dedication and service to community development becomes a bridge for honing the potentials of numerous youths – who themselves have or are now making their invaluable contributions to nation-building.
