revision

  • I colored in her eyes to sharpen them

  • I changed the hue on her skin to be a little more natural looking

  • I darkened her coat to look more black

  • I cropped the image to make her fill the frame more

  • I turned the noise down

reference photo (what I want it to end up looking like)

I chose this image because I need so much help!! This is a headshot for my friend's mom. She missed her office picture day. She wanted it to look like the reference image. I don't have a professional lighting studio, so I set her in front of a window with lights pointed at her... but the lights were not bright enough to fight the morning sun blasting through the curtains. I am embarrassed by this photo, and I hope to fix it... but I may just need to retake it. If I could edit it to look acceptable that would be the goal... She seems cloudy in the edit? She really wanted a lot of edits done to her face.

Photoshop

  • content aware fill for the original background

  • masking on the subject

  • burn tool around the subject on the background layer

  • adjustment layers including brightness/contrast, curves and channel mixer

  • the new neural filters (so cool)

Design

  • I needed to have a blank background to make editing easier, and in front of her curtains was the only option. I see now that was a mistake. I have taken photos with people against the sun and it is worked really well as a backlight... but I needed a better key light.

  • I tried burning the background a little around her to give her contrast and dimension, but I'm not sure if that worked.

  • I think that she needs to be cropped, there is a lot of empty space, but in the reference photo it appeared to be that amount of background

  • I feel like her outfit almost matches the colors of the backdrop, I would like to darken her clothing while retaining detail to bring more contrast.
