Developing Awareness of the Life and Language of Ilocanos Among Southeast Asian Teachers
DALLIASAT is a cultural immersion program whose name comes from an Ilocano word meaning “to traverse” or “to journey.” The program symbolizes the journey of SEA-Teacher participants in exploring Ilocano culture, traditions, and ways of life. Through field trips, community visits, and cultural activities, participants learn how the geography of the Ilocos region such as mountains, plains, and coastal areas shapes the lifestyle, work ethic, and resilience of the Ilocano people.
Another important aspect of the program focuses on religion, beliefs, and the Ilocano philosophy of Nakem. This concept represents moral integrity, wisdom, and cultural identity. By visiting religious sites and interacting with local communities, participants gain a deeper understanding of how faith and cultural values influence the daily life, character, and social relationships of the Ilocano people.
The program also introduces the Ilocano language as an important part of cultural identity. Through basic language lessons and interactive activities, participants learn common expressions and understand how language reflects values such as respect, humility, and solidarity. Overall, DALLIASAT acts as a cultural and educational bridge that helps SEA-Teacher participants understand the connection between culture, community, and education in Ilocano society.
