A: Finding the right instrument for your child is a difficult but important factor in your child’s continued musical success. Forcing a child to play an instrument rarely leads to the love of music making we want. My suggestion is to listen to your child's interest and passion. Also, if you are concerned about the size of the instrument (i.e. "cello might be too big for my child"), remember that string instruments come in different sizes to fit your child's needs!
A: There are two concerts for the music classes - one in the winter (January) and one in the spring (May). The Winter Concert is going to be at school during the music class time, and the Spring Concert will be held in the evening (possibly at an off-site venue).
A: For 4th grade students, I would recommend to rent an instrument for a couple reasons:
String instruments come in various sizes, and it is important to play on an instrument that fits you well. Since we cannot predict how fast your child will be growing, it would be better to go through a rental program rather than making a big purchase. However, many instrument stores offer trade-in programs if you decide to purchase an instrument and need to upgrade or switch to a bigger size later on.
Many instrument rental companies offer "rent to purchase" program, which you can take advantage of.
Most families choose to rent in the beginning in order to gauge if their child will play this instrument for many years to come.
I caution parents not to purchase instruments off certain online marketplaces carrying previously owned instruments. If a deal seems too good to be true, it usually is. If you have found an instrument deal online, feel free to email me the link and I will do my best to advise you on the quality.
While it is recommended that 4th grade families do not purchase an instrument this year, if you are looking to use this instrument for years to come (for example: you have several younger children) I highly recommend purchasing an instrument that stay in working condition for a long time. Please email me for specific brands and a price-range you are looking to stay within and I will advise as best I can
A: More than the amount of practice time, the important aspect about practice is how they practice, what they practice, and the consistency of practice. Just as athletes train regularly to be successful in a game, it is important to practice your instruments/singing regularly to maintain a level of proficiency and to progress to a higher level. Generally speaking, 15-20 minutes 3-5 times per week is recommended for beginners.
