In this section, the young people describe some the activities we completed during our Young Translators Club sessions. The activities were aimed at encouraging young people to work as a team, learn new skills (media, research and social) and share stories about their translating experiences and feelings.
What did we do?
We learned about mapping methods and created drawings inspired by our experiences
Here is a map that we split into four sections and were asked the questions: "Who do you translate for?", "Where do you translate?", "How do you feel?" and "Who is there?"
We connected strings to our quotes to show the link between them.
These two stories are based on two different girls.
The first story describes a girl helping her mum at a subway restaurant by translating what the cashier was trying to tell her mum.
The second story is based on a second girl about when they are at the airport and she is helping her mum get around because her mum does not really understand English.
We also played interactive icebreaker games and found out new things about each other
This game is based on questions to know each other such as "What is your favourite movie?" or "What's your favourite movie?" and for international woman's day, we asked the question "Who is your favourite female role model?" We passed on the ball of wool to each other to create a unique web, connecting us all together.
We produced artwork and took photographs all together
Two of our Young translators coloured in letters spelling "Young Translators Club". We then took photos as a group.
We did this because some of us don't want to reveal our identity but also to show that we are all unique and it's okay to not know how to speak another language, because we are all different.
We also learned about other cultures and languages - we even did some singing!
We used hand-shaped cardboard pages to write "Hello, How are you?" in every Club-spoken language.
