(Many versions of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter are present. Here I used the one rewritten by Yasunari Kawabata and translated by Donald Keene. All images were scanned from this book)
I. Kaguya-hime's Childhood
One day, the Old Bamboo Cutter, Sanuki no Miyatsuko, found a baby girl sleeping in a bamboo, brought her home, and took care of her as his daughter. The girl was very adorable and pretty. She grew up in one day, just like bamboo shoots. After the girl became one of the Miyatsuko's family members, the bamboo cutter often discovered gold inside bamboos. As a result, he became very rich. When the girl attained the full height, Miyatsuko asked a diviner from Mimuroto, called Imbe no Akita, to give the girl a name. Impressed by her appearance, Akita decided to name her Nayotake no Kaguya-hime, or the Shining Princess of the Supple Bamboo.

II. The Suitors
The beauty of Kaguya-hime was eventually known by the entire realm. All men were dreamed to be married to Kaguya-hime, or at least took a look at her. Among all suitors, there were five that were high ranked and held great power. They were Prince Ishizukuri, Prince Kuramochi, the Minister of the Right Abe no Miushi, the Grand Counsellor Otomo no Miyuki, and the Middle Counsellor Isonokami no Marotari. They all wanted Kaguya-hime, but Kaguya-hime did not actually have a desire for marriage. To test the depth of their feelings toward Kaguya, she requested that each of them should go to get an extraordinary treasure for her. She would marry the one who eventually showed her the treasure.
After hearing those requests, although glad that they now obtained an opportunity to marry Kaguya, all of the five suitors were upset because those treasures under request were indeed precious and difficult to discover.
(The following five chapters are about their individual journey to get these treasures.)

III. The Stone Begging-Bowl of the Buddha
Although Prince Ishizukuri informed Kaguya that he was departing for India and planning to spend three years searching for the begging-bow, he actually did not leave the country and simply found a bow from a mountain temple in Tochi districh from Yamato Province. Kaguya quickly realized that this bowl was not from India by examining if it gave off a light. Prince Ishizukuri did not win Kaguya's favor.

IV. The Jewelled Branch from Paradise
Prince Kuramochi also did not obtain the real Jewelled Branch from Paradise. He announced that he was leaving for the Horai Mountain, but he also hired six metal-smiths to make this treasure for him. When Kaguya saw the jewelled branch, she was first convinced and impressed by Kuramochi's determination, but then, because Kuramochi did not pay the six metal-smiths for making this treasure, the leader metal-smith came to Kaguya's house and uncovered Kuramochi's plan. Prince Kuramochi did not win Kaguya's love as well.

V. The Robe Made of Fire-Rat Fur
The Minister of the Right Abe did put effort to find the robe. He was negotiating with a Chinese business man and eventually bought the robe at the expense of many golds. What he did not realize was that this robe was actually a fake one. When Kaguya put the robe into fire, it burned immediately, which should not happen to the real fire-rat fur robe. Although Abe spent almost all money he had buying this robe, he still did not win Kaguys's favor.

VI. The Jewel in the Dragon's Neck
Unlike Prince Ishizukuri and Prince Kuramochi, Otomo no Miyuki did depart for the dragon. He took all of the members of his household to the journey. He thought he was the bravest man and did not fear the power of the dragon, but when he saw the storm made by the dragon, he was scared and immediately decided not to think about the jewel in the dragon's neck any more. Laughed by his first wife, he did not dare to go near Kaguya's house again, and definitely did not win Kaguya's love.

VII. The Easy-Delivery Charm of the Swallows
The first thing Isonokami no Marotari did was to figure out what the easy-delivery charm of the swallows was. He asked the men in his employ, who had killed thousands of swallows, but they did not know anything about the charm. He accidentally knew that many swallows were making nests along the eaves of the Palace Kitchen. He therefore climed into a basket and tried to feel in one of the nests. Once he found something flat, he was so excited that when his assistants lowered him down, the rope snapped and he plunged down. He broken his legs, and when he realized that what he obtained was not the charm, but simple old droppings of the swallows, he was shameful and upset. But his effort did not help him win Kaguya's love.

VIII. The Imperial Hunt
The five suitors' journeys and Kaguya's unsual beauty were known by the emperor. The emperor wanted Kaguya to be one of his court ladies, but Kaguya refused to come to the Palace. The emperor decided to go to Kaguya's house by himself, and when he was trying to take Kaguya away, Kaguya used some magical power and disappeared. The emperor started to realize that Kaguya was not a normal human being. He went back to the Palace and started to write letters to Kaguya, respecting her in a way that made Kaguya start to fall in love with the emperor, only mentally.

IX. The Celestial Robe of Feathers
After showing her magical power, Kaguya realized that she was not from the earth. Every time she looked at the moon, she started to cry because she knew that someone from the moon would come to the earth and take her back. The bamboo cutter, his wife, and the emperor were trying to prevent her from leaving, but when the next full-moon night came, people from the moon descended to the Palace. When Kaguya wore the celestial robe of feathers from the moon, she had to delete all of her memories on the earth. She was then taken back to the moon.
