Why should I choose Ysgol Castellau for my child?
We take pride in being at the heart of our community. We often refer to ourselves as "teulu Castellau" - Castellau's family, and being a small to medium school of around 250 pupils - everyone knows everyone else and we are always ready to support each other. Our mission is to ensure we get to know every child as an individual, in order to best support them and ensure they reach their potential. Our academic results compare favourably with RCT and Wales - our pupils often achieve significantly above these averages.
We are lucky to have a large building and outside area (with the best views in RCT!) with all the resources to provide a broad and balanced curriculum. We take pride in offering a wide variety of experiences both inside and outside the classroom - including sports, performance arts and various trips.
What are the benefits of a Bilingual Education?
Apart from gaining first-language fluency in both Welsh and English, bilingual education has shown to have a significantly positive effect on children's general development - bilingual children often have superior memory, problem solving and emotional skills, as working in two languages encourages the brain to adapt and develop. Additionally, by attending a Welsh-Medium school your child will fully access the rich culture of our country - being fully immersed in the arts, sports and community that identify us as Welsh.
Do you also teach English?
Yes! Our aim is that pupils leave us in Year 6 fully fluent at first language level in both Welsh and English. Our Junior pupils follow the same English curriculum as pupils in English Medium schools, and are assessed at the same standard - but are also at first language standard in Welsh. We start with learning to read and write in Welsh (which can often be easier as Welsh is a more 'straightforward' language phonetically), before introducing English a little later on. Once a child understands the skills of connecting letters with sounds, they quickly transfer this to English tasks.
I don't speak Welsh at home, will our child be able to cope?
Absolutely! The vast majority of our pupils (and pupils in Welsh Medium schools in South Wales in general) come from English speaking homes. Most of our pupils only start learning Welsh when they join us, but within a matter of weeks are understanding many key phrases about their environment. When they perform their first Christmas show, our parents and guardians are often amazed at the number of songs and rhymes in Welsh their child has already learnt. By immersing the children into Welsh throughout the day, they quickly absorb the language (children's brains are particularly good at doing this from a young age). We are always keen to support our parents in any way, and all correspondence or information from school to home (including any home tasks) are always given bilingually.
