describe the resources used in our energy production.
discuss different viewpoints that people may use in making decisions about the use different resources for energy production.
outline the choices that need to be made when considering whether to obtain a resource.
The Australian continent contains a variety of energy (Pearson Science, 2013)resources such as coal, petrol (which comes from oil) and gas for our energy needs. Coal, oil and gas are called fossil fuels because they are the fossilised remains of living things that died millions of years ago. Uranium, a metal ore, is also mined in Australia but is used as an energy resource in other countries.
As global populations continue to grow and our reliance of energy generation increases, so we need to keep investigating ways to maximise energy production, minimise energy wastage and seek alternate forms of energy.
Producing energy from fossil fuels has two major disadvantages; fossil fuels are non-renewable and the burning of fossil fuels contributes to greenhouse gas emissions which most G20 nations have committed to reducing for the sake of the planet.
What is a natural resource?
Identify three fossil fuels.
Describe how fossil fuels form.
What are drawbacks of using fossil fuels?
State why nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource.
