Our brains do marvelous things while we are reading...
RL.1 – Cite textual evidence (literature)
Students cite a word/line from a hook/trailer to justify KEEP/PASS and make a prediction.
SL.1 – Collaborative discussions
Students state a claim, listen, and respond to peers using discussion norms during rounds.
CA Model School Library Standard 4.1 – Reading for personal growth
Students select appropriate titles/formats, reflect on fit (interest, maturity, access), and plan next steps.
I can point to a specific detail from a hook, first page, or trailer and explain what it makes me predict. (RL.1)
I can discuss my choice clearly, listen to others, and build on their ideas using our class norms. (SL.1)
I can choose a book that fits my interests and maturity level and explain how I’ll get it. (Library Std. 4.1)

The Goals...
Of the R&R (Read & Recharge) sessions are to build a habit to benefit you, the reader. Let's see what it does...
Reading = Brain Combo Move
Your brain blends seeing (letters), hearing (your inner voice), meaning (memories/knowledge), and feelings (vibe). here’s even a “letter detector” area that gets fast at spotting patterns.
From Squiggles → Sounds → Sense
Step 1: eyes grab letter chunks.
Step 2: brain turns them into sounds (even when you read silently).
Step 3: those sounds trigger pictures, memories, and predictions.
the more you read, the more automatic Steps 1–2 get, so your brain can spend energy on Step 3 (actually enjoying/understanding).
"I CANT SEE THE WORDS!!!"
2 words: Graphic Novels
Stories = Simulators
When you read, your brain rehearses: “What would I do?”
That lights up decision-making and empathy systems—good for real-life choices and self-control.
Thrillers especially train prediction: noticing clues, testing theories.
Brain Perks
Focus muscle: short daily reading makes it easier to concentrate on anything.
Stress down: heart rate and muscle tension drop when you’re absorbed.
Vocabulary & knowledge: new words + background info = easier school reading later.
Small dopamine hits: every clue solved or page turned = tiny “good job” signal.
How to Get Gains
Read what hooks you: prose, manga/graphic, audio, short chapters—it all counts.
Build a habit!
10–15 minutes most days + a quick chat or note about what surprised you = growth.
🗨️ What is a Thriller?
A thriller is a mixture of Horror and Suspense. Most thrillers center around a single question: Who Did it?
A Thriller is about the chase...
There won't be as many "jump scares" in thrillers, but the plot usually will surround a crime and/or a secret and/or a sinister problem that needs to be solved.
Thrillers are also typically shorter because there is a problem to solve.
In the library, we keep Thrillers, Mysteries, Action and Crime Novels in "Suspense". We often use Suspense and Thriller interchangeably.
