Pre-conference Workshops

September 25, 2024

After the successful experience of XPRAG.it 2020(21), this year we planned three Pre-Conference Workshops on methodological aspects, hosted by the San Camillo Hospital IRCCS (Venice Lido, Italy) on September 25, 2024.

1) Distributional semantics for clinical linguistics studies

Chiara Barattieri di San Pietro, University School for Advanced Studies IUSS (Pavia, Italy)

Workshop description: The workshop will present the fundamentals of Distributional Semantics (DS) and other Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, focusing on their relevance to clinical linguistics. Applications of DS and NLP to the study of language modification in dementia, psychosis, and depression will be explored. We will discuss experimental design, data collection, and analysis of language data in clinical settings. An overview of the existing resources and tools will be presented, with hands-on practice with some pipelines for data pre-processing and analysis. Potential challenges and ethical considerations of DS, NLP, and Artificial Intelligence tools will be discussed.

The teacher: Chiara Barattieri di San Pietro, linguist, got her PhD in Psychology, Linguistics, and Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Milan-Bicocca. She worked as a research assistant at the IRCCS Fatebenefratelli - Brescia, and she is currently a postdoc fellow at the University School for Advanced Studies IUSS.

2) Pragmatic assessment and pragmatic training: Tools, procedures, and data from typical and atypical samples

Ilaria Gabbatore, University of Turin (Turin, Italy)

Workshop description: This workshop aims to provide an overview of the tools available to assess different aspects of pragmatic ability. The different perspectives (e.g. face-to-face administration or caregiver checklist) that each tool can take, and the variety of different pragmatic components each tool may focus on will be presented. Some attention will be paid to the development and adaptation processes of an assessment tool, including a cross-cultural perspective. In addition, an overview will be given of the (few) training programs that have been developed to specifically train and enhance pragmatic ability, and reference will be made to the data available in the literature on their effectiveness in different populations. Finally, some concrete examples of administration and scoring procedures as well as of training tasks and activities (video and audio recordings in Italian) will be shown and discussed.

The teacher: Ilaria Gabbatore, psychologist and psychotherapist, got her Ph.D. in Neuroscience – Cognitive Science at the University of Turin in 2013. Since her Ph.D. studies, she has been working on the assessment and training of pragmatic ability in neurological and psychiatric conditions. After a few years at the Research Unit of Logopedics, University of Oulu, Finland, she moved back to the University of Turin, where she is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Department of Psychology. Her research interests lie in the area of pragmatic communication, both in healthy people of different ages and in a variety of clinical conditions, and with a particular interest in cross-cultural perspectives.

**Note**: part of this workshop will include examples from real assessments, mainly in Italian. Translation will be provided, but critical aspects may be missed. The trainer and the organizers can provide further support after the workshop.

3) EEG data collection and tricks for better experiments

Sara Zago, San Camillo IRCCS Hospital (Venice Lido, Italy)

Workshop description: This workshop will present the basics of EEG data collection and design for EEG/ERP experiments with a focus on experiments on language. Theoretical, technical, and practical aspects will be treated together, as they are highly connected and contribute to the final quality of your EEG results. The workshop will include some frontal teaching, but will be focused on hands-on sessions on data collection and will provide a series of tips and tricks for achieving better data quality on your experiment.

The teacher: Sara Zago is a Neurophysiological Technician with 10 years old experience in EEG and MEG data collection in clinical and experimental settings, with large experience in data collection (with thousands of EEG data collected and analyzed), and expert in setup of EEG Laboratories. She is currently a researcher in the Neurophysiology Lab of IRCCS San Camillo.

Workshops are organized as full-day sessions of teaching and hands-on tutorials and will be taught in English.
