2023 Motel Xenia Igoumenitsa, Greece - Spring Semester
In 1959, in Igoumenitsa, the small coastal town of 5,000 inhabitants, the Motel Xenia was built. Like the other examples of the design and construction program of the "Xenia", the most important production of public buildings in the post-war period, it was built to be a model hotel unit of high standards and aesthetics. A representative example of the pioneering Greek post-war modernism, it bears the signature of the leading architect Aris Konstantinidis (1913-1993). A plot of land with unobstructed views of the sea and close to the road to Ioannina, which was granted by the Municipality, was chosen for the construction of the hotel, at the northern end of the city. Its construction coincides with the late period of the EOT projects (1957-1967), when Aris Konstantinidis was the head of the relevant Design Service. Konstantinidis began experimenting with the standardization of the motels, which would offer economy and speed in construction, and applied it on a pilot basis to those of Larissa and Igoumenitsa.
