This year (2019-2020), our VRC challenge is called Tower Takeover. The objective is to stack cubes in a limited amount of time, plus use the towers in various places in the field to score multipliers.
On the field, there are a total of 66 colored cubes on the field; 22 orange, 22 purple, and 22 green. Alliances may score these cubes in their two scoring zones located in the corners of their side of the field. The smaller field may only hold one stack of cubes, while the larger, protected zone may hold up to two stacks of cubes. The height of the stacks do not matter in this game, so the possibilities are endless! There are a total of 7 towers on the field. The two towers located on the front perimeter of the field are called the Alliance Towers. Only the specific alliance can score in their own tower. For example, the blue alliance cannot touch or score any cubes in the red alliance's tower.
With the number of cubes in a stack not having a limit, matches are bound to have a high amount of points. Each cube, no matter what color, is worth 1 point. Where these matches get interesting is when the multipliers get involved. A multiplier is a cube scored inside of a tower. If the red alliance puts a green cube in a tower, all the green cubes are now worth double. The more multipliers you put into the towers, the higher your score becomes.
Tower Takeover is all about strategy. Yes, the main way to score point is to stack cubes, but it's all up to the multipliers in the end. Our teams have come up with many different strategies. These may include playing defensively, or stacking high stacks of one color. Some of our strategies have worked well, but, as always, not all of them did well. We are constantly attempting to find a good strategy that can get us the maximum amount of points our robots are capable of.
