This year (2019-2020), our VEX IQ Challenge is called Squared Away. The objective of this year's game is to put the different colored cubes on their specific platforms, or goals. There are also balls that can go inside or on top of cubes to score more points.
On the field, there are a total of 7 cubes; 2 red, 2 blue, and 3 green. There are 2 blue goals, 2 red goals, and 3 green platforms. These are the places where the cubes must be scored. The blue and red goals are located in the corners of the field, while the green platforms are elevated on the field perimeter. In addition to cubes, there are also a total of 35 orange balls on the field. These balls can be put into, or on top of cubes.
Different colored cubes have different point values in Squared Away. The blue and red cubes are worth 10 points when scored, while the green cubes are worth 20 points. Each ball scored inside the cubes are worth 1 point, no matter where the cube is located on the field. Each ball scored on top the cube is worth 2 points. If all the cubes are scored, with no balls scored, the score comes out to 100 points.
This year's challenge is all about speed, yet precision. To get all 7 cubes scored, you will have to be extremely fast. To get over this challenge, our teams have been running drills to make it muscle memory for the drivers. Although speed is necessary to succeed in Squared Away, precision is key as well. To score the green cubes on the towers, the driver must be paying full attention to make sure the cube is lined up properly. It is vital that teams are fast, but also that they are precise with every movement.
