Life, Personal, and Social Science
Anatomy and Physiology
Participants will be tested on the anatomy and physiology of the human respiratory, digestive, and immune systems.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Disease Detectives
Participants will use investigative skills to focus on epidemiology (the study of diseases and how they spread), injury, health, and disability in groups of people or in a population.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Ecology (New Event)
Participants will answer questions involving content knowledge and process skills in the area of ecology and adaptations in featured North American biomes.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Forestry
Participants will learn about a variety of North American trees and be assessed of their knowledge of them, often involving identifying trees on the Official Tree List and answering general questions on them.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Microbe Mission (New Event)
In this event, teams will answer questions, solve problems and analyze data pertaining to microbes.
Earth and Space Science
Astronomy
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of Stellar Evolution and Variability by answering questions of general knowledge, math, and physics.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Dynamic Planet
Participants will use process skills to answer questions and complete tasks related to fresh water across Earth, such as lakes, reservoirs, and rivers.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Fossils (New Event)
Teams identify and classify fossils and demonstrate their knowledge of ancient life. Tasks will be related to interpretation of past environments and ecosystems, adaptations, evolutionary relationships, and the use of fossils in dating and correlating rock units.
Official Science Olympiad Page
GeoLogic Mapping (New Event)
Teams will demonstrate understanding in the construction and use of topographic maps, geologic maps, and cross sections, and their use in forming interpretations regarding subsurface structures and past depositional environments on Earth and other planetary bodies.
Physical Science and Chemistry
Chem Lab
Participants will complete one or more tasks and answer a series of questions involving the science processes of chemistry focused in the areas of Oxidation/Reduction and Periodicity.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Detector Building
Participants will build a durable Mass/Force Sensing Device that will accurately measure and display both voltage and actual masses of different solid samples ranging from 20 to 1,000 grams. teams are also expected to complete an exam related to constructing a force-sensing conductivity device. Teams are also expected to create and submit a design log showcasing how their device was built.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Forensics
Participants will use concepts in chemistry to solve a given scenario. They will be given some possible suspects, and will perform a series of tests. These tests, along with other evidence or test results, will be used to solve a crime.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Optics (New Event)
Teams will design, construct, and calibrate a single device capable of launching projectiles onto a target and collect data regarding device parameters and performance.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Air Trajectory
Teams will design, construct, and calibrate a single device capable of launching projectiles onto a target and collect data regarding device parameters and performance.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Wind Power (New Event)
In this event, teams construct a blade assembly device prior to the tournament that is designed to capture wind power and complete a written test on the principles of alternative energy.
Technology and Engineering
Flight
Participants will design and build an aircraft powered by a rubber band to achieve maximum time aloft.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Robot Tour (New Event)
In this event, teams design, build, program and test one Robotic Vehicle to navigate a track to reach a target at a set amount of time as accurately and efficiently as possible.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Scrambler
Participants will design, build, and test a mechanical device, which uses the energy from a falling mass to transport an egg along a straight track as quickly as possible and stop as close to the center of a Terminal Barrier (TB) without breaking the egg.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Tower (New Event)
In this event, teams will design and build a Tower (Structure) meeting requirements specified in these rules to achieve the highest structural efficiency.
Inquiry and Nature of Science
Codebusters
Participants (up to 3) must cryptanalyze and decode encrypted messages using cryptanalysis techniques for historical and modern advanced ciphers. They also may be required to encode messages with certain advanced ciphers.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Experimental Design
Participants (up to 3) will design, execute, and report the findings of an experiment (on site) based on the topic and materials provided.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Fermi Questions
Participants will provide answers to a series of “Fermi Questions”; science related questions that seek fast, rough estimates of a quantity, which is either difficult or impossible to measure directly.

Write It Do It
given a structure built from construction materials; the same member then writes a set of instructions on how to build it. The other team member ("doer" / "builder") is given the instructions written by their teammate and a set of unassembled materials to attempt to recreate the object as accurately as possible.
