Life, Personal, and Social Science
Anatomy and Physiology
Participants will be tested on the anatomy and physiology of the human respiratory, digestive, and immune systems.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Disease Detectives
Participants will use their investigative skills in the scientific study of disease, injury, health, and disability in populations or groups of people.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Ecology (New Event)
Participants will answer questions involving content knowledge and process skills in the area of ecology and adaptations in featured North American biomes.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Forestry
Participants will learn about a variety of North American trees and be assessed of their knowledge of them, often involving identifying trees on the Official Tree List and answering general questions on them.
Earth and Space Science
Dynamic Planet
Participants will use process skills to answer questions and complete tasks related to fresh water across Earth, such as lakes, reservoirs, and rivers.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Fossils (New Event)
Teams identify and classify fossils and demonstrate their knowledge of ancient life. Tasks will be related to interpretation of past environments and ecosystems, adaptations, evolutionary relationships, and the use of fossils in dating and correlating rock units.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Meteorology
Participants will use scientific process skills and qualitative/quantitative analysis to demonstrate an understanding of meteorological concepts, specifically Everyday Weather.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Reach for the Stars (New Event)
Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the formation and early-stage evolution of stars and their observation across the electromagnetic spectrum.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Road Scholar
Participants will answer questions that test their ability to interpret, collect data, and make conjectures from maps, specifically one or more state highway maps, USGS topographic maps, Internet-generated maps, a road atlas, or satellite/aerial images.
Physical Science and Chemistry
Air Trajectory (New Event)
Teams will design, construct, and calibrate a single device capable of launching projectiles onto a target and collect data regarding device parameters and performance.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Can't Judge a Powder
Participants will observe a pure substance and be asked to characterize it and answer a series of questions about the substance. Importance is on the quality of data collected, answering questions about the substance , the observation of its reaction, and the data used to support their answers.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Crime Busters
Participants will solve a fictional crime scene with a scenario, a collection of evidence, and possible suspects. A series of tests will be conducted to answer questions and to solve the crime.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Optics (New Event)
This event deals with geometric and physical optics, such as reflection, refraction, critical angle, electromagnetic and visible spectrum, lenses, and mirrors.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Wind Power (New Event)
Teams construct a blade assembly device prior to the tournament that is designed to capture wind power and complete a written test on the principles of alternative energy.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Technology and Engineering
Flight
Participants will design and build an aircraft powered by a rubber band to achieve maximum time aloft.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Roller Coaster
Participants will design and build a roller coaster, using spherical vehicles, to travel the track as close as possible to a target time between 10 and 60 seconds.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Tower (New Event)
Participants will build a bridge (within event construction parameters) that is lightweight and capable of holding a designated weight for maximum structural efficiency.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Wheeled Vehicle
Participants will construct a vehicle powered only by a non-metallic elastic solid device. The vehicle must travel a distance as quickly and as accurately as possible.
Inquiry and Nature of Science
Codebusters
Participants (up to 3) must cryptanalyze and decode encrypted messages using cryptanalysis techniques for historical and modern advanced ciphers. They also may be required to encode messages with certain advanced ciphers.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Experimental Design
Participants (up to 3) will design, execute, and report the findings of an experiment (on site) based on the topic and materials provided.
Official Science Olympiad Page
Fast Facts
Participants are tested on general science categories by filling in a grid of terms that begin with a given letter to match given science categories.

Write It Do It
One team member ("writer") is given a structure built from construction materials; the same member then writes a set of instructions on how to build it. The other team member ("doer" / "builder") is given the instructions written by their teammate and a set of unassembled materials to attempt to recreate the object as accurately as possible.
