Fall Tips from BLUE LINE Mobile RV Repair:
Some things the customer should be doing NOW:
As we embark on the end of the RVing season on Long Island (for most), be sure the plumbing system in your RV is winterized. Water should have been drained from the tanks and plumbing lines, and possibly filled with a Non-Toxic anti-freeze. DON’T forget the refrigerator’s ice maker, outside shower, washing machine, if equipped, and of course the water heater. Non-Toxic Anti-freeze must be poured down each drain and toilet to prevent damage from freezing.
Check the fluid level in each battery. Fill it only with distilled water to the specified level and apply a trickle charge for the winter. Keeping your RV plugged in will take care of this without having to remove the batteries. WEAR EYE PROTECTION AND GLOVES when working on your batteries.
If you cannot park your RV on a paved surface, avoid areas of tall grass if possible. Inspect the under belly of your RV for any openings. Small rodents looking to nest for the winter may try to seek these out to enter your coach. Placing dryer sheets such as Bounce in drawers, hatches, and small crevices underneath can keep them away.
Some RVers with young children often turn their coaches into Santa’s Workshop during the Holiday Season, and also like to take advantage of the extra refrigerator space when guests come over for the Holidays (We did for many years.). This is fine, but make sure your RV winters on level ground. If your RV isn’t level (or at least nearly level), running an RV absorption refrigerator can cause permanent internal damage to the cooling unit.
When your finished, leave the refrigerator doors open slightly after shutting it down for the season to increase airflow and prevent mildew.
Finally, close all slide outs during those snowy days. That extra weight on a slide room could cause damage, not to mention destroying your slide out topper awnings (if equipped).
All of the above tasks can be done by any RVer, but if you would like, don’t hesitate to call Blue Line Mobile RV Repair and we will be happy to winterize your RV for you.
