The SAT and ACT are college entrance exams that measure a student's knowledge and skill set related to college readiness and success. They are mostly used for students planning to attend a 4-year college or university since schools look at these scores for admissions. All students can take this test, including those planning on attending community college or trade school.
Colleges and universities do not have a preference towards either test, so choose whichever one you prefer.
The SAT involves two math sections (calculator active and calculator inactive) and two reading sections (identifying vocabulary and reading passages), with an optional writing section. The test takes about 4.5 to 5 hours complete and is scored between 600 and 1600. Most public universities in North Carolina require a minimum score of 880. Most colleges do not require you to take the writing section.
The ACT involves a math section, two reading sections (identifying vocabulary and reading passages), and a science section, with an optional writing section. Most colleges do not require you to take the writing section. This test also takes about 4.5 to 5 hours to complete and is scored between 1 and 36. Most public universities in North Carolina require a minimum score of 17.
A few ways:
Many schools are choosing to go test optional, meaning that a test score is not required to gain admission into the school. All the UNC System schools have elected to do this, as well as many private and out-of-state schools.
Research schools you are interested in and see if they still require a score.
Many testing centers were closed over the summer. If you register, make sure to check the ACT/SAT website frequently leading up to your test date, to make sure your testing center has not been closed.
If they do close the testing center, you will be reimbursed.
If you do elect to still take a test, know the new precautions. As of right now, you will be required to wear a mask for the duration of the test.
** When deciding whether to take or re-take a test, consider:
Do I feel safe going in and taking a test right now?
If you do NOT, it is not worth it. Definitely do not risk your or any of your loved one's health for this test.
Am I interested in a particular college or scholarship that is requiring a test score? If so, consider taking the test.
My score is a few points below the average test scores for the student profile of the college/university I am interested in (ex. You are interested in App State, have a 23 ACT, App's average is 23-28). Should I retest?
Again, only if you feel safe. If you do, I recommend studying up and then retaking it to get it 1-3 points higher.
For tests offer fee waivers - SAT offers two fee waivers for students unable to pay, and ACT offers four fee waivers. See if you qualify for an SAT fee waiver or an ACT fee waiver.
