CELA and Dolphin Easy Reader

The instructions below assume that VoiceOver is turned off, however, Dolphin Easy Reader is designed to be used with a screen reader so it is entirely accessible.

1. Open Dolphin Easy Reader App

Dolphin Easy Reader is a FREE app, but an account is required to use the app. You can use your Google account to login or create a unique Dolphin Account.

2a. Tap Sign Up

If the student does NOT have a Dolphin Easy Reader Account or a Google account, they can create a Dolphin account by tapping Sign Up. The student will need to know and have access to a personal email address to verify the account. Follow the prompts on the screen to complete registration. The student can then check their email for an account verification email to confirm the account. Once registered, they can proceed to 2b.

NOTE: Students without a personal email address can obtain a student account for Dolphin Easy Reader. Contact Ms. Rutter for help.

2b. Tap Google or Dolphin

If the student does have a Dolphin Easy Reader or Google account, they can login by tapping on the login option they would like to use and entering their email and password.

NOTE: Once a user is logged in to Dolphin Easy Reader, they will remain logged in on that device until they log out.

3. If Login information has been entered correctly you will be logged in.

Tap OK.

4. The default screen is My Books, a virtual bookshelf.

To add something to My Books, tap the image in the centre of the screen or the side menu in the upper left corner.

5. Choose the CELA Library database.

Tap CELA Library.

6. Login to CELA Library.

Enter your username and password for CELA Library.

NOTE: Educators who work with students in a formal education setting can Qualify for the Educator Access Program, meaning if a student cannot download materials for themselves, you can download materials for them.

7. CELA Library shelf

Any books that have been "borrowed" in the CELA account that you have logged in to will appear here. If the book you want is listed, proceed to STEP 15.

8. Switch to a web browser

After opening Safari or Chrome, place the cursor in the address bar and type celalibrary.ca to access the CELA website.

9a. Log in

Tap Log In.

9b. Enter Log In information

Place the cursor in the Username field and enter the username and password for the same CELA account that you used in Dolphin Easy Reader. Tap Log in to complete the process.

10. Search

Place the cursor in the Search box to locate a book using a key word. Tap the Search button to search.

11a. Filter results

Not all Search results will be in a format that is compatible with Dolphin Easy Reader. There is a column on the Left under the heading Filter Results. You can filter by Collection, Language, Formats, Fiction, Non-Fiction and Audience. Once you have selected a filter, the results will automatically update. To limit results using more than one filter, choose them one at a time and wait for the webpage to refresh before selecting the second limiter. If you do not have access to Bookshare, limit results to CELA only. NOTE: Audio from CELA will typically be narrated by a human voice. Audio from Bookshare will exclusively be narrated using synthetic speech.

11b. Filter results by Format

To send the file directly to Easy Reader, choose a Direct to Player option. This can be DAISY Audio (Direct to Player) or DAISY Text (Direct to Player).

12. Choose

Choose a book. To add it to your Dolphin Easy Reader account, click Get it!

13. Verify the book has been added

If you have followed the steps, you will get a pop-up confirming that the book has been added to your bookshelf. Switch back to the Dolphin Easy Reader app.

14. Switch to Dolphin Easy Reader and check your CELA Library Bookshelf

In the Dolphin Easy Reader app, the book you chose in the web browser should be listed on your CELA Library bookshelf.

15. Choose the title

To select the book you want, tap on the title.

16. Borrow the book

Tap Borrow.

17. Open or Download the book

If you are using WiFi and want to stream without downloading, tap Open. The book will open and you can begin to read. The book will no longer function if you disconnect from WiFi.

If you plan to leave an area with WiFi and want to continue reading offline, Tap Download. If the book has started to download, a progress bar will appear in place of the download button.

18. Open the book

When the download is complete, the button will now say Open. Tap Open.

19a. Skip the boring stuff

An eBook is exactly the same as the print book, meaning that the front matter (copyright information, title page, dedication page, etc.) will need to be skipped over. Tap the Book Navigation Icon.

19b. Choose a place to start

Once you are in the Book Navigation menu, select the first chapter or as near as you can to the beginning of the content. All eBooks will be formatted a little bit differently.

20a. Customize the font

To change the text settings (including contrast) tap the letter A in the upper right corner.

20b. Change the text settings

Adjust size, contrast, spacing and colour to suit the reader's preferences.

21a. Customize the audio

To change the audio settings (including speed and voice) tap the speaker icon in the upper right corner.

21b. Change the audio settings

Adjust rate, pitch, volume, pause and voice.

NOTE: Dolphin Easy Reader comes with one free voice. New voices require users to pay for additional options.

22. Read

Tap the play button at the bottom of the screen for audio and line tracking. If the reader does not need audio and does not need highlighting, do not press play. Scroll through the text as needed. If the student prefers the VoiceOver voice instead of the voice that is included with the app, they can perform a two-finger swipe down to read using VoiceOver.

NOTE: When using the Play function, pages will turn automatically. When scrolling or using VoiceOver for speech, tap Load Next when you reach the bottom of the page.
