VoiceOver is Apple's screen reader and is installed on all Apple Devices by default. Most iPads in the school have been set up to turn on VoiceOver by pressing the Home button rapidly three times. This is called the Accessibility Shortcut. Using the Accessibility shortcut is the fastest way to enable/disable VoiceOver. VoiceOver can be turned off by pressing the Home button rapidly three times. If the shortcut has not been set up, follow the steps below under the heading "Accessibility Shortcut."
To enter the VoiceOver menu, tap VoiceOver (green arrow number 1)
Once in the VoiceOver menu, drag the switch to the right to turn it on. You will now need to use VoiceOver gestures
VoiceOver Settings can be used to change features of and settings used with VoiceOver. Tapping on a setting will open a sub-menu of options. The most frequently used settings are highlighted below.
Zoom is a way to magnify all of or parts of the screen and is typically used by low-vision students.
To enter the Zoom menu, tap Zoom (red arrow number 2)
Once in the Zoom menu, drag the switch to the right to turn it on. Though the setting has been turned on, it will not function until you perform a Zoom gesture:
Other Zoom settings can be changed within the Zoom menu.
When turned on, Magnifier will use the iPad/iPhone camera as a hand-held CCTV to magnify whatever is in front of the lens.
To enter the Magnifier menu, tap Magnifier (blue arrow number 3)
Once in the Magnifier menu, drag the switch to the right to turn it on. As with Zoom, the setting is on but will not automatically open. To activate the magnifier, triple-click the Home button. NOTE: If the Accessibility Shortcut has been set, triple-clicking the Home button will open a menu to select which accessibility feature you would like to use.
This menu will change the way colors are displayed on the iPad/iPhone screen.
To enter the Display Accommodations menu, tap Display Accommodations (yellow arrow number 4)
Once in the Display Accomodations menu, you can access other sub-menus to turn on other settings such as Invert Colors (switch from white with black to black with white) or apply Color Filters (will recolor the screen to accommodate various forms of colour blindness).
Speech is a feature that can be used to speak text or content on the screen without using VoiceOver.
To enter the Speech menu, tap Speech (orange arrow number 5)
Once in the Speech menu, drag the switch to the right to turn it on the features you would like to use. When Speak selection is on, it adds a speak button to the menu that pops up when text is selected. When Speak Screen is on, a two-finger swipe down will read the contents of the screen.
Larger text customizes the size of text in menus and apps native to the iPad/iPhone. For example, when using the App, Notes, with Larger Text enabled, the default font size of a new note will match the setting applied in this sub-menu.
To enter the Larger Text menu, tap Larger Text (purple arrow number 6)
Once in the Larger Text menu, drag the switch to the right to turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes. This will increase the largest size available on the slider. Move the slider to the right to increase the size and back to the left to decrease size.
Pressing the Home button rapidly three times will activate whichever accessibility feature has been enabled. This is called the Accessibility Shortcut.
Once in the Accessibility Settings, swipe up to reach the bottom of the menu to find the Accessibility Shortcut. Tap it to enter the Accessibility Shortcut sub-menu.
Tap on the feature that you would like to enable by triple-clicking the Home Button. NOTE: You can select more than one feature at a time. If more than one feature is selected, triple-clicking the Home Button will bring up a pop-up menu to select which feature you would like to enable.
