During the Middle Ages Christianity spread throughout the entire continent of Europe. Kings, such as Charlemagne, brought Christianity to conquered lands. In other places, such as Ireland, priests brought the new religion. Eventually, Christianity became central to life for almost everyone in Europe. People even measured a simple act like boiling an egg by the length of time it took to say a certain prayer.
Not all Europeans were Christians, however. Jews had lived in villages and towns throughout Europe since the early days of the Roman Empire. Muslims had come to Spain around 700 A.D. In this chapter you will read how the Christian Church in Rome affected Europe during the Middle Ages.
