The story of European movement around the world begins in the late 1400s. Explorers were able sail to distant lands as a result of new technologies in ship building and navigation.
In the early 1600s, Galileo used a new invention, the telescope, to look into space for the first time. He saw more stars than he could count. He wrote:
Upon whatever part of the galaxy the telescope is directed, a crowd of stars is immediately presented to view. Many of them are rather large and quite bright, while the number of small ones is quite beyond calculation.
