By the end of the eighteen hundreds, Britain's empire stretched around the globe. Britain had colonies in Africa, Americas, and the Middle East. It also controlled Hong Kong in East Asia and the island continent of Australia. However, many British people thought one colony in particular to be the bright jewel in the imperial crown.
This jewel was India. It was exactly what Britain wanted a colony to be. The Indian subcontinent provided the British with raw materials for industry. The British introduced their way of organizing government and parts of their culture. British technologies such as the railroad helped build industry in India. Even so, as time passed, more and more Indians believed that their nation should gain independence from British rule.
